Walt and I went shopping on Friday to a fancy mall in Troy, Michigan called the Somerset Collection. He wanted to go to the Apple store there to ask some questions about his iPhone5s. The Apple Store is huge there and it was a mad house! It made me want to pick up some Apple stock, seriously.
The mall is a perfect place to take indoor outfit shots during Michigan’s dreary fall days.
How to wear a plaid shirt in the winter? Wear plaid in holiday colors and couple it with lots of bling!
When we left the house, I said to Walt, “Do you think this outfit has too much bling?” He quickly replied, “No! I think the plaid shirt gives it a casual feel, but it still looks dressy.” I wasn’t convinced but I kept it on due to his enthusiasm!
Surprise! As I shopped, while he was in the Apple store, I had no less than 5 people tell me they liked some aspect of my outfit: the necklace, my lipstick, or the shirt. Now I have worn this outfit before (all black) without the red plaid shirt, and received nary a compliment, so I am sure it was the pop of red plaid from the Foxcroft shirt that got me all the attention.
We took the next shot in a long covered “walking sidewalk” overpass that connects two sides of the Somerset collection over a major street.
I show you this for two reasons. One is that I want to illustrate that your fashion pictures as a fashion blogger are still possible in the winter, you just have to be creative. Second, I think it’s fun as a reader sometimes, to understand where we are and what we did to get the shots you see.
This plaid blouse is part of Foxcroft’s Holiday Checklist collection. Haven’t checked out Foxcroft lately? You will be surprised! They still have the same high quality but the look of their products along with updated social media makes them a force to be considered. Women over 45 (and all our younger friends) should check out our blog article or head over to Foxcroft to view their Holiday Checklist.

I love plaid. I wear it year round, but love it during the holidays. When I was a girl we used to wear plaid kilts to school because we weren’t allowed to wear pants. Maybe that’s where my love for plaid began. 🙂
It’s funny Elin. Some people say that same situation made them HATE plaid. Isn’t it weird how different people react to the same situation? The CHief Blonde
Wear it nice and loose. It’s a comfortable look!
Wow, Shelley- you look smoking! I love this look, it is definitely something I would style and wear if I had the capability of putting an outfit together on my own! I wear long sleeve plaid shirts with a tank and jeans, during the Winter, because in SoCal, I can- I’ve also tried the tie-back of a plaid shirt, under a crop jacket, and it looked fairly cute.
If it was last year I would have tied it around my waist. Wonder if that’s still in style?
Darn – I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of all those plaid shirts that “used” to be in style..I should know better. Things ALways come back…
YEss Sheryl, The 70s were so fashion forward. Teehee. Shelley
WILL I wear plaid this season? Just try and stop me. I’m wearing plaid right now, as a matter of fact.
Love the outfit, BTW 🙂
Thanks Jackie! Good for you and being MAD for Plaid.
I don’t currently have any plaid but you have definitely inspired me to go out and find some! Shelley, you look HAWT in that oufit you put together, love it!
Thanks Tina. I want a picture when you get some. SHELLEY
I love the sparkle and plaid. I don’t normally wear plaid or haven’t in a while but I just bought a new plaid jacket that I am in LOVE with. Will be sharing it on the blog soon in fact. You are too cute! and festive. 🙂

Super cute. I love black plaids.
There’s great lighting there that beautifully captures what you are wearing, Shelley! Looks like a lovely place to shop…when it’s not crowded!
Yeah everyplace but the Apple store…bahahahah. Shelley
I think all the Christmas lights are a nice touch as well – do I have to carry those behind me as part of the ensemble? 🙂
Kimba, Oh that’s funny! It was fun going there and have someone else do all the work! Shelley
I think the only time I really wear plaid is on flannel shirts in winter. I love how cozy they are!
Not a big plaid fan myself but the more I wear it, the more fun I have with it. It just feels so ’70s. Shelley
I like wearing a big flannel plaid shirt with leggings and boots!
I, too, love plaid!! To me it is so comforting. It just makes me feel good inside and out! You look great it this outfit!
I love your outfit, especially the plaid shirt. Great look! I love how you showed where you were photographed.
It’s fun to see the inside story sometimes isn’t it Mary? Shelley
I’ve found plaid to be very soft and comfortable in the past. Somerset is a great place for a photo shoot!
And we know it well. Shelley
You took plaid out of the realm of the Northwest and into elegant. Love.
ahhh Carol. You are so sweet as always. Shelley
I don’t usually wear plaid but you make it look really stylish so I would definitely consider an outfit like yours 🙂
Thanks Kathy. It’s the only plaid shirt I own. BUT I do have a really vintage plaid skirt that I love. Shelley
I never would have thought to dress up a plaid shirt that way. I love it! I would totally wear that.
My inspiration was an outfit I saw on Gal meets Glam. She is my favorite fashion blogger. Shelley
Yes, I do wear plaid, will wear plaid and I really like wearing plaid. Let’s face it, I like plaid. 🙂
I had a pair of plaid pants years ago- I don’t think they’d fly nowadays but a shirt or skirt might work.
I absolutely love red plaid mixed with black.Looks so good together.
