Walt and I went shopping on Friday to a fancy mall in Troy, Michigan called the Somerset Collection. He wanted to go to the Apple store there to ask some questions about his iPhone5s. The Apple Store is huge there and it was a mad house! It made me want to pick up some Apple stock, seriously.
The mall is a perfect place to take indoor outfit shots during Michigan’s dreary fall days.
How to wear a plaid shirt in the winter? Wear plaid in holiday colors and couple it with lots of bling!
When we left the house, I said to Walt, “Do you think this outfit has too much bling?” He quickly replied, “No! I think the plaid shirt gives it a casual feel, but it still looks dressy.” I wasn’t convinced but I kept it on due to his enthusiasm!
Surprise! As I shopped, while he was in the Apple store, I had no less than 5 people tell me they liked some aspect of my outfit: the necklace, my lipstick, or the shirt. Now I have worn this outfit before (all black) without the red plaid shirt, and received nary a compliment, so I am sure it was the pop of red plaid from the Foxcroft shirt that got me all the attention.
We took the next shot in a long covered “walking sidewalk” overpass that connects two sides of the Somerset collection over a major street.
I show you this for two reasons. One is that I want to illustrate that your fashion pictures as a fashion blogger are still possible in the winter, you just have to be creative. Second, I think it’s fun as a reader sometimes, to understand where we are and what we did to get the shots you see.
This plaid blouse is part of Foxcroft’s Holiday Checklist collection. Haven’t checked out Foxcroft lately? You will be surprised! They still have the same high quality but the look of their products along with updated social media makes them a force to be considered. Women over 45 (and all our younger friends) should check out our blog article or head over to Foxcroft to view their Holiday Checklist.

Ah I missed the question – I would absolutely wear plaid this holiday season but I would have to style it much the way you did OR a preppy look! I could not wear it with denim as it would be too country on me and I already look like a tomboy lol
LOVE this outfit Shelley! You look amazing and so happy. What a beautiful woman you are.
thanks Joely! Shelley
Plaid is hot this year. Under a vest would look great too.
I have a plaid vest or two, gotta find those.
I like plaid myself. Yours looks great by the way.
Thanks Sandra.
I love wearing red and green plaids for the holidays
Oh I’d like to get some green plaid for the holidays.
I wear it with jeans or black pants. I wear it open over a solid color shirt and several other ways too!
I have a pair of blackwatch plaid (very dark plaid) pants. They work well with white and dark blue.
I have several plaid shirts and wear them as frequently as I can. The light weight ones I wear over a camisole or T-shirt. My heavier ones I wear over a turtleneck. In the Fall, that works perfectly instead of a jacket. A plaid in holiday colors is perfect. I have plaid holiday decorations, so wearing it would fit nicely.
Plaid Holiday decorations…no way! I want to see those. Shelley
No pictures, but large bows on the wreath, small bows on pictures and trees, one small plaid skirt. I have a Christmas bear with a plaid outfit.
I love plaid pants! Thats how I like to wear plaid!
I have a pair of plaid pants and somewhere I have a cute plaid skirt. I have to find that!
I have a pair of blackwatch plaid pants that I wear. Very subtle and dark.
I love plaid i also have a plaid pair of pants you can wear plaid glamourously or you can wear it country style with boots i would wear it everyday if my wardrobe would allow it
yes, country style would be cute with this, I have some lower black boots I could try that with.
I would consider wearing a red and black plaid Vest on the Holidays. I actually think that Plaid Green,Red,Black look really traditional for Christmas..
I agree Cathy.
Yes I will. I do really like plaid and have several good blazers/jackets etc from years back when plaid was the thing that look like they have never been worn or not much anyway. I love how you styled your plaid. Looks festive.
Thanks for the compliment. Yeah once you get to be 50, you hold on to that stuff as you know it will come back again.
Plaid is in this year. I always because of the many years of uniforms at a girls only school. This year I took a plunge and bought the first plaid blouse in 40 years. I would wear it with a jacket and scarf, leggings and Uggs, so many versatile combo’s that I have overcome the 40 year avoidance of plaid.
Does it feel weird to wear it after so long? It did for me. It was so popular in the 70s.
I haven’t worn plaid in a while, but it looks like it’s going to be one of the hot styles this winter. Love it!
Thanks Jeanine! Check out Foxcroft sometime, I was surprised how much they have updated. The Chief Blonde
Great outfit. I love the baseball shirt too. The bit of red sets the whole thing off.
Maybe need some read on the boots too. Or a ribbon in your hair..
The baseball shirt was one of those uber steals. Got it like 90% off from Old Navy Sherry. Shelley
I love plaid flannel shirts which I’ve worn over a red tank top.I’m not into fashion at all.You always look pretty in all your photos.I love that huge wreath your standing in front of. Beautiful mall too 🙂
Thanks for the compliments Sue. The Chief Blonde
My favorite mall and it’s only 1-1/2 miles away from my house!
Oh that would be soooo dangerous Lori! Shelley
This was very nice to read.thanks for the great ideas.
I have never worn holiday plaid before. It looks so great with your all black outfit that I will have to try it!!
You should!
I LOVE Plaid! The Outfit is awesome!
THanks Julie! Love, Shelley
I love plaid – I always have. It just makes me smile. I have holiday plaids and I have summer plaids. I guess I am just plaid mad.
