Holiday Plaid! How to Wear a Plaid Shirt in the Winter

November 16, 2014 By Shelley Zurek 137 Comments

Plaid is Mad! Bring down your holiday sparkle with plaid!

Holiday Plaid! How to Wear a Plaid Shirt in the Winter Foxcroft

How to Wear a Plaid Shirt in the Winter? Foxcroft sent us this amazing plaid shirt to show you how!

The Chief Blonde is wearing:

Foxcroft Holiday Red Wrinkle Free Tunic (Exact $80)

Sears Pleather Moto Jacket (see it again here and here) (Similar here )

Old Navy Sequin Baseball Shirt (S)

Monroe and Main Gold and Rhinestone Necklace ($35, sale: $17)

Black Leggings ()

Loft Suede and Leather Oxford Boot (Similar)

Michael Kors Multifunction Tote (IT HAS POCKETS Inside!) ()

Walt and I went shopping on Friday to a fancy mall in Troy, Michigan called the Somerset Collection. He wanted to go to the Apple store there to ask some questions about his iPhone5s. The Apple Store is huge there and it was a mad house! It made me want to pick up some Apple stock, seriously.

The mall is a perfect place to take indoor outfit shots during Michigan’s dreary fall days.

Holiday Plaid! How to Wear a Plaid Shirt in the Winter Foxcroft

How to wear a plaid shirt in the winter? Wear plaid in holiday colors and couple it with lots of bling!

When we left the house, I said to Walt, “Do you think this outfit has too much bling?” He quickly replied, “No! I think the plaid shirt gives it a casual feel, but it still looks dressy.” I wasn’t convinced but I kept it on due to his enthusiasm!

Surprise!  As I shopped, while he was in the Apple store, I had no less than 5 people tell me they liked some aspect of my outfit: the necklace, my lipstick, or the shirt. Now I have worn this outfit before (all black) without the red plaid shirt, and received nary a compliment,  so I am sure it was the pop of red plaid from the Foxcroft shirt that got me all the attention.

We took the next shot in a long covered “walking sidewalk” overpass that connects two sides of the Somerset collection over a major street.

North-Skywalk-East-Facing Somerset Collection

I show you this for two reasons. One is that I want to illustrate that your fashion pictures as a fashion blogger are still possible in the winter, you just have to be creative. Second, I think it’s fun as a reader sometimes, to understand where we are and what we did to get the shots you see.

This plaid blouse is part of Foxcroft’s Holiday Checklist collection. Haven’t checked out Foxcroft lately? You will be surprised!  They still have the same high quality but the look of their products along with updated social media makes them a force to be considered. Women over 45 (and all our younger friends) should check out our blog article or head over to Foxcroft to view their Holiday Checklist.

How to wear a plaid shirt in the winter…what do you do?  Will you consider holiday plaid for the upcoming season?

Ah I missed the question – I would absolutely wear plaid this holiday season but I would have to style it much the way you did OR a preppy look! I could not wear it with denim as it would be too country on me and I already look like a tomboy lol

I have several plaid shirts and wear them as frequently as I can. The light weight ones I wear over a camisole or T-shirt. My heavier ones I wear over a turtleneck. In the Fall, that works perfectly instead of a jacket. A plaid in holiday colors is perfect. I have plaid holiday decorations, so wearing it would fit nicely.

No pictures, but large bows on the wreath, small bows on pictures and trees, one small plaid skirt. I have a Christmas bear with a plaid outfit.

Yes I will. I do really like plaid and have several good blazers/jackets etc from years back when plaid was the thing that look like they have never been worn or not much anyway. I love how you styled your plaid. Looks festive.

Plaid is in this year. I always because of the many years of uniforms at a girls only school. This year I took a plunge and bought the first plaid blouse in 40 years. I would wear it with a jacket and scarf, leggings and Uggs, so many versatile combo’s that I have overcome the 40 year avoidance of plaid.

Does it feel weird to wear it after so long? It did for me. It was so popular in the 70s.

Great outfit. I love the baseball shirt too. The bit of red sets the whole thing off.

Maybe need some read on the boots too. Or a ribbon in your hair..
