Highly Anticipated Michelle Obama Inaugural Gown 2013

Michelle Obama Inaugural Gown 2013 was the most anticipated fashion garment and perhaps one of the most anticipated events of this long and glorious Inauguration Day.  The day wound through various events including a early visit to church services, public inauguration, luncheon, troop review, inauguration parade, and then the two balls.  Michelle had two outfits and three shoe changes which carried her through the day.

Alina Cho from CNN sent out this Jason Wu First Look Tweet.  The sketch   reads on the right, from top—Gold embellished ring, Draped chiffon w/texture, Red dye to match duchess satin belt, Column skirt and is  signed by Jason Wu.

Most people were sure that the inaugural dress would be a new and upcoming American designer but many were SHOCKED that the Michelle Obama Inaugural gown 2013  was a 2nd time choice for American designer Jason Wu, who also designed Michelle Obama 2009 inaugural gown.  The dress was a ruby red chiffon and velvet custom designed halter dress. The shoe designer was Jimmy Choo.  Michelle also wore stacked bracelets.   She wore a handmade designer ring by Kimberly McDonald.  Michelle stands 5′ 11″ to Barack  Obama 6′ 1″ and is a Women over 45 who just celebrated her 49th birthday on January 17, 2013.

During the Inauguration Day public ceremonies and private church services, Michelle Obama wore a navy silk dress and coat by Thom Browne, an American designer. According to Thom Browne, the dress was inspired by the men’s ties and the blue color that he imagined that Barack Obama might wear for his inauguration.  During church services, Michelle wore a pair of J. Crew pumps  and then for the outside inauguration ceremony and the inauguration parade she switched to custom made Reed Krakoff boots (which took 3 weeks to handcraft).  Michelle Obama’s accessories included a J.Crew fuchsia gloves, belt and pumps.  Her necklace was by Cathy Waterman.  Thom Browne is from Allentown, Pennsylvania and the President of the iconic brand Coach.

At the end of the inaugural festivities, Mrs. Obama’s outfit and accompanying accessories will go to the National Archives.

Why Michelle Obama’s Fashion Choices Matter

According to the New York Times,

In a 2010 study of her economic impact, David Yermack, of the Stern School of Business at New York University, found that the average value to a company from an appearance (in their clothing) by Mrs. Obama was $14 million.

Inauguration Balls Severly Cut

In recognition of the economic times, President Obama has cut back severely on the number of official inauguration balls.  This year there will only be two official balls both in the same convention center, versus 2009 when the balls totaled ten!  In sixty years, there has never been so few balls.   This will reduce government spending and the amount of security and law-enforcement personnel needed.

Besides the photos, thanks for the intelligent article about her fashion influence. Bright and very welcome.
I love the red, of course, but was pleased to see her and the girls wear purple right after the election.
And I LOVED the Inauguration Day coat and boots.

I learned yesterday that she was the 1st Democratic First Lady to wear red at an Inaugural Ball in 100 Years. I like the red on her better than the white.

I think that both gowns were gorgeous! I guess I like her first dress a bit better, but I really do adore both.

I personally love the white more because I’m not really into wearing full red outfits but it is nice!

Cool idea to compare the two dresses. Looks like 2013 is the winner hands down. I agree!

I think her daytime outfit is really nice and super classy exactly what we have come to expect of her at public appearances. As for her evening look she looks really well put together but I am not sure the cut flatters her body as well as it could have. I do like the color red on her more then the white though and I know she really likes Jason Wu.
