The dress was a ruby red chiffon and velvet custom designed halter dress. The shoe designer was Jimmy Choo. Michelle also wore stacked bracelets. She wore a handmade designer ring by Kimberly McDonald. Michelle stands 5′ 11″ to Barack Obama 6′ 1″ and is a Women over 45 who just celebrated her 49th birthday on January 17, 2013.

Michelle Obama Inaugural Dress 2013 : Lft to Right, Top to Bottom — J. Crew Belt, Thom Browne Coat, J. Crew Gloves, J.Crew Pumps, Reed Krakoff Leather and Suede Custom Boots, and Cathy Waterman Necklace.
During the Inauguration Day public ceremonies and private church services, Michelle Obama wore a navy silk dress and coat by Thom Browne, an American designer. According to Thom Browne, the dress was inspired by the men’s ties and the blue color that he imagined that Barack Obama might wear for his inauguration. During church services, Michelle wore a pair of J. Crew pumps and then for the outside inauguration ceremony and the inauguration parade she switched to custom made Reed Krakoff boots (which took 3 weeks to handcraft). Michelle Obama’s accessories included a J.Crew fuchsia gloves, belt and pumps. Her necklace was by Cathy Waterman. Thom Browne is from Allentown, Pennsylvania and the President of the iconic brand Coach.
At the end of the inaugural festivities, Mrs. Obama’s outfit and accompanying accessories will go to the National Archives.
Why Michelle Obama’s Fashion Choices Matter
According to the New York Times,
In a 2010 study of her economic impact, David Yermack, of the Stern School of Business at New York University, found that the average value to a company from an appearance (in their clothing) by Mrs. Obama was $14 million.
Inauguration Balls Severly Cut
In recognition of the economic times, President Obama has cut back severely on the number of official inauguration balls. This year there will only be two official balls both in the same convention center, versus 2009 when the balls totaled ten! In sixty years, there has never been so few balls. This will reduce government spending and the amount of security and law-enforcement personnel needed.

That was a really lovely ball gown. I have liked just about everything she has every worn though. She just wears her clothes really well. Of course that is probably because she chooses so well!
I have to say the red looks smashing on her, but I was more impressed with her inauguration outfit. THAT was classy!
Kas
I think the Red dress makes her look a little wider, so I’m not sure I would have gone with the draping around her hips, but I don’t much care for the red one, either…..Do love the ‘male designer’ designed coat though!
It’s insane how much work goes into this but she looks stunning
Oh goodness, this lady can wear just about anything and make it work and look absolutely stunning. I personally love this year’s dress. The Red just screams out to me!
I love her red dress and I am loving her even more with bangs!!! Way to rock it FLOTUS!
you know what? my friend’s husband was on the design team that created obama’s dress!!! he was working REALLY hard on this VIP project these past few weeks!!! i love how it turned out!!

Sandy
You should interview him Sandy. THat would be so interesting. Maybe its not allowed?
Now that is cool. I bet they had to sign all sorts of documents promising not to give away a single detail of the dress!
For her, the red!!
She is one stylish first lady
She rocked the red. I love it!
I think they are both pretty, but the red one really speaks to me 🙂
I think she looks magnificent all the time. Really lovely fashion choices.
Just gorgeous!
She looked beautiful, as always…but I actually preferred the 2009 gown. I think all the build-up and the buzz around the gown set my expectations way too high, because last night, she still looked fabulous. I was just expecting to be blown away. The pressure she must deal with regarding her fashion choices must be overwhelming!
I loved this year over the 2009 white gown. It was more sophisticated. She looked gorgeous.
She looked beautiful. Red was a brave choice and she wore it well.
Michelle looked great today. Loved her new bangs and her pretty blue outfit as well as the gown.
I thinks she looks very pretty in the red. It flatters her complexion, and the bangs just top the whole look right off. She looks younger now than she did in 2009! =D
I didn’t watch much of the ceremonies, but I caught it as she and the President were walking down the parade route. The color of her daytime outfit was an unfortunate choice. She blended right into the pavement!
she looked amazing!
