Mistakes that I Made: What Not to Name Your Blog
“This post “What NOT to Name Your Blog | 10 Steps To Choosing Your Blog Name” was inspired and sponsored by Domain.ME, the provider of the personal domains that end in .ME. As a company, they aim to promote thought leadership to the tech world. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Blog naming mistakes: What NOT to do when naming your blog
As you know, I have been blogging for 7+ years. When I chose my blog name back in 2009, I didn’t really do any research. I just decided to start a blog, tried to think of a catchy name that said “Women over 45” and “Me”, and named it “Still Blonde after all these Years” as I was inspired by the Paul Simon song “Still Crazy after all these YEARS”. So much for using my MBA knowledge, right?
After I named my blog, I realized that I had made many mistakes in my name. Here’s what NOT to name your blog:
- Don’t have a blog name that is TOO long — Still Blonde after all these Years has 34 letters. It might not seem like much to type but imagine if your name was 34 letters long…you get the point.
- Don’t have a blog name where the spelling isn’t clear — The “Blonde” in my blog name has always given me fits. Blonde and Blond are pronounced the same. I always have to spell it for others. If people can’t spell your personal domain, they can’t get to your site!
- Don’t have a blog name that is a made up word — If you are the next “Google” or “Yelp” you can introduce a new word via your blog title and make it work via a huge advertising budget. Otherwise, simple words in the language of use are more easily remembered.
- Don’t choose a blog name that no one can pronounce — A foreign word, a complex word or phrase may help you to stand out or it may make you forgettable.
- Don’t pick a blog name that limits you — unless you want to rename/rebrand often. Choosing something like Dad of 2 rascals (and then you have 3 more rascals) will make your title irrelevant fast.
- Don’t forget to consider social media — is the name you are choosing available across all platforms and are there enough characters to spell it out on the social media site and in the social media site url? I had to shorten my blog name in the url for most social media sites because they didn’t allow 34 characters. For example, I had to use http://pinterest.com/stillblondeaaty and no one understands what stillblondeaaty means.
- Don’t get too sassy with your name — Consider carefully when using curse words, vulgarities, current “cool” words, or any name that is in your face. This might work for a handful of people who can carry it off over time but many of us decide to monetize our blogs, sponsors hesitate on any name that is dicey. Your online reputation matters as you build your blog. Consider your purpose carefully as you create your online business.
- Don’t back into your domain name — One of the biggest mistakes people make when launching their website is to back into a domain name by adding hyphens and getting creative with spellings in order to find an available .com. A company called Domain.ME is a top-level domain provider and the .ME extension offers the flexibility to create clever, memorable online destinations. That’s part of why .ME domains are so great – there is a much larger pool of clever available domain names – while having all the same SEO benefits and value as the more traditional domains, such as a .COM.
10 Steps To Choosing Your Blog Name
Being sure to incorporate the wisdom of the “What NOT to Name Your Blog” above, here’s 10 steps to choosing your blog name:
- Keep your blog name short, simple, easy, clear, free of offense, and pronounceable.
- Your blog name should make sense to other people (sponsors, readers, people who search and land on your site, etc.)
- Check all social media sites to ensure you can claim them under your blog name of choice and you that don’t have to shorten or abbreviate.
- Create clever, memorable online personal blog names that don’t involve convoluted spellings or hyphens. This can easily be done by considering a unique, safe identity online with a domain ending in .ME. .ME domain names are also very popular among the global startup scene for the many meanings .ME carries and the opportunity to get a short, highly-branded, and memorable domain name with a personal feel to it.
- Choose a blog name that is representative of what you’re offering.
- Pick a personal domain name with an intuitive URL that people can remember when they inevitably lose your business card.
- Identify a blog name that will make sense as you grow and evolve.
- Alliteration can be your best friend when choosing a blog name. My friend’s blog name is “Keenly Kristin”. Another blogger friend uses “Simply Stacie”. The double letters in the words (K or S) are memorable.
- Consider using your own name. You will always be YOU. You can grow, switch your subjects and/or become an authority on various topics but You will always be YOU.
- Select a name you can say out loud without being embarrassed. I can’t tell you how many bloggers hate saying their blog name out loud.

This is great advice. I can’t imagine being too embarrassed to say my blog name out loud.
Picking a name is very exciting but also extremely stressful. These are some great points to think about.
Great advice. I’ve wanted my current blog name for years but went through four others before I went with it. Simple Sojourns. I found a lot of people didn’t know the definition of sojourn but decided it was time they did. Ha! I’m happy with the name and my co-blogging husband is too.
I probably have a name that breaks a few rules but I work with it well. the tips are good and I may take a few to heart.
What a great informative post! I’ve always thought to try and make my blog name something that was catchy so that people would identify me with my blog. I’ve been following you for years and I love your name! The moment I see anyone mentioning your blog, I can automatically place your face with your blog…..to me that’s important! Great tips!
Thanks Lisa! The Chief Blonde
When I started my blog year’s ago, I didn’t think ahead. I would love to change my blog’s name!
These are great tips on picking a blog name. I am still pleased with the names of my blogs.
These are actually extremely good tips! When I was looking for a title for my blog it probably took me a good couple months before I figured out what I really liked. Once I had it down it was cake from there.
I wish the .ME domain thing had been around when I was first starting my blog. I think it’s such a neat idea.
I love my blog name, but then again – I know a lot of people who aren’t from New England don’t get what a masshole is. Around here, it’s hilarious, though.
It seems that you learned the hard way to be able to say what NOT to name your blog.
This is interesting. I follow a lot of blogs and some are pretty closely named. You I have followed forever way back when your contests were emailed to you! I have never won but have always enjoyed visiting. I think a blog name is important.
It sounds like a .ME is a great way to get a blog name you want without having to come up with something that hasn’t already been snagged in the more commonly used .COM.
The widget doesn’t seem to work. Sends me to a blank page.
I’m thinking about changing my blog name to Elleberra. I have used that for all my social sites and email. What do you think?
If I change the name it won’t matter so much what I write about. On the other hand I love the name of my blog. I just don’t think other people love it lol.
I think your name is general enough that you could expand to anything. I think Elleberra is cute too, easy to say as well. Of course, I am your fan so anything you do is perfect. Shelley
Have I told you lately that I love you??
That said I know bloody well that perfect is not a good description, but I really appreciate the boost. Maybe I’ll just start a different blog then, for other “stuff”.
Thank you! 🙂
Hope it’s ok that I’m writing on this post so soon. My daughter does a daily “holiday” post, and she told me today is Name Yourself Day. I thought of this post and your tips for picking a blog name. It’s funny how we come up with names. Have you always liked yours? Did your children ever want to change their names? My daughter loves names and has often thought about changing her middle name. I don’t think she would do that permanently anymore, but I think for one day she would. You may have sortof stumbled into your blog name, but it really does seem to fit you. I like it! Good job picking.
I have always liked my blog name but I must say it does violate many of the rules I now know to be true. It does fit the blog concept and me as well. I think you know me quite Sherry! Shelley
This is great information for folks planning to start a blog. I don’t have one, wasn’t considering starting one, but loved reading this article! This is probably the most informative article I have read on the subject. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for your sweet compliments Margaret! The Chief Blonde
I’ve always been impressed with the catchy names people come up with for their blogs and wondered how they do it. This is how. Your tips are good
This was fabulous information! Very helpful~thank you for sharing!
Ooh these are great tips!! My best friend (of 21 years now) have been talking about starting one but cannot think of just the right name yet!! I will have to send this to her!!
These are great tips! I hadn’t even thought about making sure it was available on all platforms but so important. I agree with keeping it short and not just representative of you now, and it is hard when you use a word that can be spelled many ways or by using creative spelling. You want your name to stick and stay fresh in their mind.
