Creating a memory wardrobe : How our memories live on through our clothes
Yep, that’s me in that photo above.
On the right, is “yesterday me”. I am just 17, starting my senior year of high school…the whole world is ahead of me. To prove it, I put on a beautiful new pink sweater, wore my mom’s best necklace and memorialized it all in a rather serious senior picture.
On the left, is “present day me”…55, a little blonder, a tad bit heavier, 4 children for the better, and a lot more experienced in love and loss.
But the sweater…it endured…after all these years. It’s still just as soft and pink as ever. When I touch it, memories flood in of:
- That day long ago when I went to the photographer and had the photo taken
- When I passed out the photo to all my friends as we neared graduation
- When it appeared in the yearbook, along side all the people who I had went to school with since kindergarten.
Essential Memory Wardrobe elements: T-shirts
These shirts are from my university days. I went to General Motors Institute for my undergraduate degree where I was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Administration (Business degree). While I was in my senior year, General Motors stopped funding the school and turned it into a private institution, now called Kettering University. So I keep the t-shirt in my memory wardrobe as a placeholder for the school I did attend but that no longer exists.
I attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business to get my Master of Business (MBA). Guess what? That school no longer exists either, at least not in name. A big donor, David G. Booth, came in with a $300 million donation and BAHM, the graduate school was renamed the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business. Imagine… once again the school I attended is only in my memory wardrobe.
We keep our memories in a memory wardrobe for a reason…
Clothing like the sweater and t-shirts above are physical memories. When we see these article of clothing in our memory wardrobe, they take us to the time and place when we wore them. Hence, they are quite hard to take out of our closet. So if we are going to keep these items of clothing we might as well keep them nice right?

My white graduate t-shirt was stained when I pulled it out for pictures. All I did to extend it’s life was to pre-treat with Clorox 2 Stain Remover & Color Booster, then wash as usual with Clorox 2 product and my favorite detergent. The t-shirt looked great again.
As a bonus, Clorox 2 Stain Remover & Color Booster Liquid can be used with both standard and High-Efficiency washing machines. Here’s a some tips for using Clorox 2 in both kinds of washing machines:
- For standard washing machines, add product to the wash basin along with your favorite detergent.
- Fill the cap to the first fill line for small or regular loads and to the second fill line for large or extra-large loads.
- For HE washing machines, fill to the first fill line and add product with your favorite detergent in the detergent dispenser.
- For best results, start the washer and add both detergent and product before adding clothes.
- For extra-dirty clothes, pre-soak the garments before starting in mixture of 1 cap-full of product (to the first line) and 2 gallons of water (the warmest water recommended on the care label). Pre-soak for 30 minutes.

I learned about some of the animal preservation efforts that Clorox does
I am a big fan of Clorox. I wasn’t aware of the Clorox Safe Water Project in Peru. Amazing! I became aware that Clorox donates to disaster relief to help in stopping infections in the US and around the globe.
I learned that their products are very healthy to use
Did not know that this company was founded in 1913!
That bleach starts out as salt and water and ends as salt and water
I learned that Clorox cleaning products do not contain any ingredients that will harm your septic system when used as directed.
I’m amazed that Clorox has been around for 100 years.
They have a urine remover product??? Thank heavens. One of my cats is a “phantom pee-er” and there are a few stinky spots I didn’t find soon enough.
Side note: Clorox wipes are one of the greatest inventions of all time.

I had no idea that they made a “urine remover”. As gross as that is, they really cover a wide variety of cleaning purposes!
I learned that sodium hypochlorite is the main ingredient in Clorox bleach that kills 99% of bacteria & viruses found in untreated water.
I love the Clorox has a whole page devoted to every stain imaginable, and that you can click on the stain & they tell you step-by-step how to go about removing it.
Well, I’m not sure this counts as “fun,” but I was pleased to learn that Clorox partners with the American Red Cross to help with clean-up after disasters like floods. That’s a good reason to support the Clorox brand, as far as I’m concerned.
I did not know that there was a Chlorox Urine Remover. Great to Know. Not really a fun fact, per say….
