WHOA Network New Video Network and Website
for Women 40, 50, 60 and beyond
The Chief Blonde Remarks: Recently, I was asked to be a guest commentator on a NEW Network, the WHOA! Network. The WHOA Network is for women 40+ who are past childbearing age and are starting to explore the next phase of life. The topic that I was asked to speak on was:
Am I Too Old to Wear THAT?
I shared the stage with 3 other “over 40 Fashion/Lifestyle bloggers” including: Deborah Boland from Fabulous after 40, Oceana Lott, Creator of Oceana’s Canvas, Sylvia van de Logt, Creator of 40 + Style. Hosts for the topic were WHOA! Network’a founders Darryl Pollack and Lynn Forbes. Topics covered include:
- What fashion issues are women over 40 hungry to solve?
- Are there or should there be RULES for Women over 40?
- Best style advice from the panelists (the Chief Blonde discusses shoes)
- Am I too old to wear this?

If you were to ask the Chief Blonde for some fashion advice, what would you want to know?
Blog Note: The Chief Blonde was not compensated for this post. She just wants you to WATCH her on the WHOA! because she LOVES to be on stage!

Where do I start? Well, I have already asked her what shoes should I wear, how should I do my hair. Chief Blonde is like my own personal fashion consultant ;). I highly recommend her services!
Till what age can I get away wearing short shorts?
HI Jadey, I personally don’t think there is a Specific age. But many times you can look in the mirror and just know… Also, I think Short Shorts can work at a later age depending on the occasion and shoe worn. It’s so much a matter of proportion. One of my rules is…if it feels rediculous, it probably looks rediculous too!
How can I fight age spots?
Yeah, that’s a tough one Lena. There are creams and such which are supposed to fade those. I haven’t used any. In this case, I’d start with a good dermatologist
All my weight goes to my tummy…drives me nuts! What is a good way to be in style but not look like you have muffin top!
Great ways to cover up muffin tops include:
Jackets that go over the buldge.
Tunics with leggings
Dresses that fall away after the breast line
Wearing Dresses in general instead of pants.
Wearing better fitting Pants
Wear shapewear especially highwaisted underwear!
Thank you Shelley! These are excellent suggestions. 🙂 I’m also dieting and exercising to lose that bulge. 🙂
My fashion question would be what would you suggest for three styles of shoes to start a fashion wardrobe?
You need a nice pair of casual shoes either cute flats or a fun heel. Something you can shop in. Then you need a pair of dress shoes for church. Finally, nice sandals should finsih things up. Of course, it depends on season, your life style a million different things. By the way I did not mention a sport shoe as I don’t consider them part of a “Fashion Wardrobe”.
I’d want to know how to style my hair from day (office) to night without having to lug around bulky styling tools!
With your pretty long hair, a really great “Dressy” ponytail would be the way to go in my opinion. Just a ratting comb and some “Bumping” skills and you can move from Day into night without the bulk.
My question is how to wear mini skirts without looking like I am trying to be a teen.
Pam, Depending on your age, micro minis are probably only for the very young woman. However, a short skirt is totally wearable at any age. It’s all about the legwear and the shoes. For me, if I keep the shoes, legwear and skirt/Dress all in the same color it works. Here’s a woman who’s easily in her 60s wearing a shorter skirt and looking super cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCIqZOUPS_g&list=UUD1eaRPxbF8feSgVPjo3_Rw&index=46
How do tall plus-size gals find shirts that are long enough to provide some mid-section coverage. I constantly find that clothing manufacturers think all plus-size women are under 5’5 and tall shops don’t cater to people over size 12. I’ve had this problem most of my life, but particular as child-bearing, health issues and age have had an impact on my tummy!
My husband who is 6’6″ has this exact same problem. It’s really frustrating for you isn’t it? One of sister in laws who is 5′ 10″ does something that works well for her. She often wears dresses that are button down the front with slacks. The end up looking like a longer jacket.
How about Men’s tall button downs? And then get the sleeves altered? Or maybe just having a few really nice jackets and shirts made for you?
Thanks Shelley for the very helpful advice! I hadn’t thought of wearing a dress as a shirt/jacket, but that’s a terrific solution. I could even hem the bottom myself to bring it up, if needed. Would probably work very well with short summer dresses, too. I’m totally going to explore this- such a great idea!!
Oh goodness, I have to agree with the good jeans question! I want to know what type of clothes are best to flatter my body type. I always see these awesome clothes, get them and they just never look as good on me.
My advice there is to take your butt to the store and try them on. If you need someone advice go to a Nordstroms or Macy’s and have a personal shopper help you. The extra you might have to pay for the jeans will more than make up for it by fit you will get. THEN BUY 3 pairs! If you just can’t do that…take a girlfriend and hit the stores that you can afford. JEAN Shopping is Work (along with Bra and bathing suits).
Another alternative is to find someone who looks like you (in shape) in a mall with cute jeans on. Then ask them where they bought them!
When is it too old to wear cute graphic tees? I can’t stop wearing them!
See this article in Advanced style? If you are as badass as this woman..you can still wear them into your 70s! http://advancedstyle.blogspot.com/2013/03/blog-post_23.html
shelley you are too cute!! excited to meet you!! 🙂 hmm fashion advice… what do you think are the classiest colors to wear?
xo,
Sandy

Black, white and Metallics rock through the ages of fashion in terms of classy IMO. But also, cut leads to fashion more than color IMO.
The eternal question – good jeans for an aging body.
