Tea Tasting? What’s That?
Blog Note: How to Tea Taste, Tea Tasting with Cindi Bigelow was inspired by an all expense paid trip via a contest that I won from Bigelow Tea for writing “Around Grandma’s Table“. I was uncompensated for this post but some of the content does come from that trip.

Cindi Bigelow explains How to Taste Tea in this video
12 Steps of tea tasting
- Provide enough spoons so each participant can have two per kind of tea
- Taste one kind of tea (green or black or herbal) at a time
- Fill tea cups (5 is a good number) with various brands of one kind of tea. One brand per cup.
- Be careful that tea is not to hot. Like Goldilocks, the temperature needs to be “Just Right”
- Take a spoon in each hand
- Choose one spoon to be your “dipping spoon”
- Choose the other spoon to be your “tasting spoon”
- Dip the dipping spoon into a cup, take a spoonful of tea, pour the tea into your tasting spoon
- From your tasting spoon, slurp the tea into your mouth such that it sprays all over the inside of your mouth
- Be careful not to choke from slurping too enthusiastically
- Move on to the other cups of tea
- Do NOT MIX your spoons!

I love how it was created by his mother over 60 years ago and in her kitchen. I’m surprised it is still a family company and has not sold out to a bigger food company. That is unusual in this day and age.
Love that it’s a family company that started in a mother’s kitchen
You’re going to think I’m insane, but I really do really think the fact that they created Bigelow during the Great Depression and the War– in itself–is not only unbelievable given the economic hardship of those times, but truly a test of endurance. the fact that it’s still around years later and people love that Constant Comment so much, speaks loads. I also liked the fact that she didn’t like store-sold tea and aimed to do something different, something not so harsh, and came up with that. I have a super sensitive digestive system and so many teas I have bought in the store are crap. It’s refreshing to know that someone many decades back had the same thoughts and created something that is still so popular and good nowadays.
Bigelow has accomplished quite a feat…they have achived a “Zero Waste to Landfill” status. That means that they have to send less than 10% of their waste to landfills.
That is so neat that constant comment was developed in a home kitchen! It’s a eat reminder that not every company is just a nameless faceless corporate entity, it’s touching that bigelow is really a family business at heart
I love that Ruth Campbell Bigelow invented and named Constant Comment and they will never let anyone talk them into changing the name.
I like the part of the story how his Mom in her tiny kitchen experimented to make blends of teas and also the name came about.
I didn’t know that Constant Comment was invented by the company owner’s mother. That is sweet.
I love that this company is family owned and run!! I feel good about that.
The part that touched me the most is that it’s family owned, and has been passed from generation to generation.
I like that the The Charleston Tea Plantation has idyllic conditions for the Camellia Sinensis plant…it sounds so romantic!
I love that they raised $60,000 for charity, also that Bigelow Tea is a family company that has tried to do the right thing for both the planet, the community, and our employees since the f company was founded by grandma back in 1945.
how it was first made by his mother 60 years ago, it very touching to see his commitment of continued goodness like his mother made. It shows his devotion to her
I like how Constant Comment was created in his mom’s kitchen in 1945…it has been a staple at my grandma’s house since I was a little boy and I buy it now for my family. Awesome stuff
I love that it was created in someone’s kitchen, same as my soap & candles!
I like their commitment to the planet. “do the right thing, and good things will follow”.
We love BIgelow tea so much here!
I love that it’s stayed in the family!
I am touched by the fact this major company, was created by a lady in her kitchen in 1945. And it’s still going strong! How sweet is that?
I love how they’re a family owned company.
