House Walking : Top 10 Reasons to House Walk & America’s Biggest Health Fair

October 5, 2015 By Shelley Zurek 99 Comments

Have you ever heard of House Walking?

House Walking Top 10 reason why you should house walk

House Walking: The benefits of a House Walk

Do you know when you Google the word “walking” and look at the images that very very few images are of people walking inside? While you might find a few of people striding through an airport, hardly any can be found of people walking in a home.

Why is that do you think? Probably because people think of walking as an exercise and most people agree that exercise that involves forward movement is best done outside.

House Walking was created by me (and apparently many others after a quick Google search). It is the activity of walking in your house (or apartment stairwell, garage or office building hallway).  Essentially, what you do is try to gain extra steps throughout your day by sneaking them in where you can.

Top 10 reasons why you should be House Walking

  • House Walking (or any kind of casual walking) burns about 2 calories/minute so 10 minutes of casual walking burns 20 calories or 120 cal/hour.
  • You can House Walk any time of day
  • You can House Walk while talking to someone on the phone
  • You can watch a movie on your smart device and House Walk
  • Folding laundry is a great way to get in House Walking by folding a few pieces and then delivering them to the user’s room (repeat, repeat, repeat)
  • If you live in an apartment with a covered or enclosed hallway, this is another great place to House Walk
  • A garage can provide and excellent place for House Walking.
  • House Walking can be done for as long or short or period as necessary
  • House Walking can help you reach your overall “Step” goals without heading to a gym or a track
  • House Walking can be broken up throughout the day, even 10 minutes an hour will add to your health

Love the idea of house talking! I know I love to walk and talk on the phone at home, or while cleaning its a great way to get in extra steps.

I like this idea! I wouldn’t mind getting up to stretch and look at the birds on the feeders anyway.

What a great idea. My MIL has major issues from not doing anything for so long that her legs have literally stopped working. I keep telling her that little steps will help. I will have to let her know all the reasons she should house walk 🙂

I’ve never heard of house walking before. I walk every day but I do it outside. I’ll have to keep this in mind for days that are raining!

I house walk. Especially in the winter. Too far to drive to town and too cold outside. It works.

I didn’t know Walmart was having a health fair. I might just check that out.

    Thanks 🙂

I like the idea of house walking. With a new baby at home, it’s hard to get any kind of exercise in other than swaying and rocking the baby. I like the idea of just being able to walk around at home. It’s simple and can be done without even really trying.

I wonder what chasing after goats burns? The yurt is not that big so there is nowhere to really walk. I suppose I could walk AROUND the yurt 😉

I like to move a lot around the house whenever I am doing chores like cooking, doing the laundry etc. I also do indoor walking when I can’t get out to walk.

I house walk all the time, I never knew it was a thing!? My husband calls it pacing, but now I’ll tell him it’s actually exercise lol

I totally do this all the time! When I am doing my daily laundry. I will take smaller piles to each bedroom to get more steps in. Great post!

Walking is so good for you. Low impact and weight bearing it has many benefits. From time constraints to weather, we often put off walking outside, but no one said you had to go out. You are right. After my daughter was very sick, we were trying to get her back on her feet. They told us to start off just walking around the house several times. She knew the layout and the ground was flat. Great post for bringing this to everyone’s notice.

I love the idea of this! When I am home I always use the upstairs bathroom so that I can take the stairs.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of “House Walking”. Before reading this post I thought of walking as an activity done outdoors. I have several uses of 10 minutes for a healthier life, I can do yoga, lift weights, or do crunches.
