Fifty Shades of Grey Review–The Non-review of this Trilogy
I am not going to go into the detail of these novels, the Shades of Grey Trilogy by E.L. James, other than comment that Erotica, S&M, and sex dominated books are NOT my idea of books that should be occupying the #1, #2, and #3 spot on the New York Times best seller list. REALLY? No… I haven’t read them, nor do I have any interest. Ellen’s response is pretty much my own, but her face and expressions are funnier so I let her say it for me!
I must admit that I am not above what I wistfully call, “Mind Twinkies”. That is, books that have no intellectual value whatsoever, but take me back to a pleasant emotional place or just whisk me away to a fantasy world where I feel happy, pleasant feelings.
Twilight was such a series for me. I think Stephanie Meyers truly captured what it means to be 17 and in love. I needed that in my life right then. I fell in love with Edward, and I fell hard. And, like Nina, my husband was the recipient of all that spill-over lust.
As far as 50 Shades? I’d love to read them if just for the camp of it, but I refuse to spend a full $9.99 for each of these books when I know that they are terribly written. As a writer–and a vain one at that–I can’t help but feel a tad bit resentful that this pseudonymous writer is making money hand over fist for such crappy prose. (BTW, if you want a good laugh, just go read all the 1-Star reviews of the first novel.)
Frankly, I think modern life is very hard for women and they are tired of feeling like they have to be in charge of EVERYTHING. The fantasy that there is an all-powerful man out there who can come along and give us what we want in our darkest fantasies is VERY alluring to today’s in-control woman. I believe that’s why this trilogy resonates for MANY women.
Thankfully, I’m married to my very own Christian Grey and I don’t need a fantasy one to take his place. But I don’t judge any woman who wants a little thrill. We don’t always need our intellect tickled. Sometimes we just want a good fantasy fun and the chance to eat a few brain Twinkies.
AN interesting response. “Mind Twinkies”! I love that!
LOL! You’re not embarrassed by my admission? I always seem to say a little more than I mean to! Now I’m kinda curious to see the movie! I don’t know how they’re gonna do that!
She’s a laugh riot. I’m not one for this series of books, though I think the varied opinions on them are pretty darn entertaining.
HI Shelley, After reading above comments, I guess I’m feeling a little guilty maybe. Well, not really. I don’t feel much guilt at my age anymore. I read all 3 books because my neighbor friend told me about it and both of my daughters-in-law told me about it. Yes, I’m a lucky mother-in-law to have such a good realtionship with them! Anyway, I read them and was initially a little surprised at how graphic they were. But then it was like driving by a traffic accident! My curiosity got the best of me and I couldn’t put it down! And want to know a little secret? They kind of brought a little excitement into a post menopausal but sexual 54 year old grandma. My husband loved the books and never read one page, if you know what I mean!!
OK, now you can all think of me what you want! HA HA I saw this show that Ellen did and thought she was great. She is so funny!
Nina, YOu have just moved up on my list of BLOGGERS I LOVE! The Chief Blonde
I have no interest in reading this book. I tried, and I just couldn’t.
I haven’t read it yet, but it has become quite the pop culture darling! It seems like *everyone* at my job is reading about it and/or talking about it.
I’m on the ‘refusing to indulge such childishness’ side of the Fence. There have been naughty books for centuries- nothing published in a makeshift fan-fic could top what has already been written. Much like the Twilight series that inspired it, it is my opinion that the excerpts I have seen follow a very similar, easy to read, lack of intellectualism that is the exact opposite of why I pick up a book in the first place. It’s one thing to have well written steamy accounts that pertain to an actual story or captivating relationship, it’s another to write such things to get raised brows and attention.
I’m in the well over 50 age group. I have the trilogy and read it during a tedious rail journey. I was giggling throughout, and started to count the ‘Oh mys’, ‘Jeez’, lip chewings, inner goddessing and the number of times the hero’s eyes smouldered, darkened, changed colour …
The ‘scenes’ weren’t shocking. I have read worse in factual accounts of 17th/18th century London bawdy houses.
