Discretion: the quality of behaving in such a way as to avoid revealing private information
Practicing Discretion: Questions we all struggle with!
When you were younger (or even today), did you DIE when you had to purchase feminine care items? Did sneak these products on the shopping list so your mom or husband would have to buy them? If you had to buy them yourself, did you buy a massive cart full of other items, so no one would see? Did you pray that you wouldn’t run into a soul you knew, when you had “THAT ITEM” in the cart?
Well, it often feels the same when you are purchasing bladder protection products. Everyone seems to be walking with a hush though the aisle. Each person seems to want to find what they need, and get the heck out of there. It’s just so personal, definitely a situation that calls for some discretion. But these days, is a disguise really necessary?
Times are changing. You can be discreet and still be real!
When I first started talking about bladder leakage on my blog just a little over a year ago, other bloggers wouldn’t even retweet my tweets! I had several of them tell me “I don’t talk about THAT on my blog”. Now that brands, like Always Discreet, a discreet bladder protection product, have joined the conversation, the open discussion of bladder protection has become more acceptable. I have noticed that women bloggers and everyday women alike are much less hesitant to bring up the topic. Yes, most feel the topic still needs some discretion, but there is no need to disguise yourself in the grocery store or hide bladder protection products under a mass of groceries.
Bladder Protection is just another personal care item
Seriously, we all love to laugh, dance and celebrate, don’t we? And no matter what is going on with my body, I seriously would not want to stop any of those activities. Yet, laughing, dancing, and celebrating can serve as a trigger to those who need bladder protection. This is an issue when you use the newest line of bladder protection products from P&G Always:
- Always Discreet Liners — Absorbs 2X more than you may need* (*based on average US consumer usage)
- Always Discreet Pads–Up to 40% thinner* and absorbs 2X more than you may need**(*than the leading brand, **based on average US consumer usage)
- Always Discreet Underwear
The Always Discreet Liners work great for me. They are ultra-thin and neutralize odors instantly and continuously. Being individually wrapped, Always Discreet liners give me that discretion I need when I carry them in my purse or pocket. I can even use the wrapping from a new one to wrap up an old one for discreet disposal.

Do you think Bladder protection is a subject that is out in the open? Discreet? Taboo?
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Shelley you are adorable! 🙂
Never thought about it so I’d say it’s open. Funny gif with you in the disguise!
Kind of funny you pointed out about other bloggers not wanting to retweet. I felt that way last week thinking “are people gonna wonder why I’m retweeting this? OMG!” But then I did it anyway. Whether we admit it or not, bladder control is something that’s very real and women need to know that they’re not alone.
I love the discrete packaging and how people are talking about the issue more. It makes women feel less awkward. Adorable hat, by the way!
Leaks are one things but floods from positional changes (after driving for 4 hours) are something else entirely. Large baby jumping up and down on your bladder for severals months has its costs.
Cute post! I think the issue of bladder leakage, especially in women, is less taboo these days because we’re better informed on the whole. It is SUCH a common issue, especially for women who have given birth vaginally. I’m not shy about sharing information like this. So glad you’re sharing helpful info for those ladies who may still be too shy to ask!
I used to be the person that was horrified to buy any sort of personal product.
Not sure what happened but it no longer bothers me. I work with the elderly and I pick these products up for them and myself all the time. It is also the topic of frequent conversations in my work circles.
I think it’s important to get all “embarrassing” topics out in the open. Those liners actually seem like a great idea.
The whole thing is less embarrassing now. Good ads, good pr, and the armor that comes with age helps too!
I just wrote a post about these for healthywomen.org…they are quite necessary for women of a certain age 🙂
I love the way the latest liners are so thin and comfortable. I need them from time to time. Love that incognito look you’ve got going when shopping at Target. LOL!
I requested the sample. Thanks for the link! I’ve been seeing these in the store and wanted to try them.
I think it’s becoming more openly talked about than it was years ago. It happens and it should not cause embarrassment to purchase something to help.
Only starting to get discussed now…with so many bloggers in the discussion. Before that I had never heard a peep!
I like how most liners are very thin, too. Easy to carry in a pocket or purse, like you say.
I know I’ve talked about it before with my sister-in-law, who’s had trouble since her last pregnancy (coughing? laughing too hard? sneezing? forget it!), so I definitely think it’s a topic that more people are talking about. And for sure it’s nice to see that trusted companies like Always are working to provide products for bladder control issues… products that aren’t diapers!
Oh Shelley, you crack me up- I don’t think there is anything that needs to be discreet about bladder protection. I feel more embarrassed buying tampons- guys and gals have bladder issues at some point during their lives. And, just like women have periods, many women who go through pregnancy have LBL for a while after giving birth. It’s natural!
When I was younger, I would have died if I met someone with a bag of pads in my hands. But now, I make my husband get them!
Hey once you hit your mid 30’s it can happen! I am 45 and I have always used Poise but since the Always line came out I am going to give them a try for sure! Not pleased with how the poise pads tend to stick to some fabrics of my undies! I mean stick and NOT come off all the way! So I am excited for a new brand to try out! YAY!
This is a huge issues in my MS community because bladder and bowel problems happen to many. It began happening to me as well – there, I’ve said it out loud. I’m not embarrassed about it because it’s a bodily function that happens. So your post is an important one, Shelley, and I thank you for writing it.
