4th of July Food Crafts for Kids: Layered Patriotic Treat

June 11, 2015 By Shelley Zurek 306 Comments

4th of July Patriotic Treats that Kids can Make!

layered Crispy Rice Krispies Kids Food Crafts 4th of July Patriotic Treat blog

Don’t you just love the 4th of July, Flag Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day? They all inspire such patriotism. I love going to the parades in my little town and all the great family get-togethers. It’s fun to take along a special treat, so when SweetWorks sent me a bunch of their patriotic decorative candies, I knew I had to go full red, white and blue!

This is a 4th of July food crafts for kids but they will probably need your help on a few steps. But there are a lot of fun things for them to do as well. I would say that the main thing you need to do is watch and stir the marshmallows, especially once the food coloring has been added. Also, stirring in the crispy rice and moving quickly to get it into the pan is a must.

4th of July Kids Food Craft, a very fun to make Layered Crispy Rice. Can be adapted for any holiday or occasion
Author: Shelley Zurek
Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Serves: 18 pieces
Ingredients
  • 6 Cups Crispy Rice cereal (like Rice Krispies)
  • 3 Tbs. butter (plus extra for buttering your hands)
  • Red and blue food coloring (I recommend Wilton's Gel for more intense color)
  • 10.5 oz bag of marshmallows
  • Sweetworks Candy or similar for decorating
  • Decorative toothpicks
Instructions
  1. Prepare a loaf pan, by greasing it with shortening or spraying well with cooking spray.
  2. You will now begin making the layers:
  3. Measure out 2 cups of Crispy Rice and put in a mixing bowl, set aside
  4. At low heat, in a medium sauce pan, melt 1 Tbs of butter
  5. Add ⅓ of marshmallows to the butter and continue to melt slowly, stirring occasionally
  6. Add Red Food Coloring to the marshmallow mixture, until it's the shade you want
  7. Remove from heat
  8. Stir in the 2 cups Crispy Rice that you set aside. Move quickly but stir enough to get the coloring spread over all the rice.
  9. Use a wood spoon to get mixture into loaf pan. Use buttered hands to press down very flat.
  10. Wash the sauce pan and spoon with HOT WATER thoroughly before proceeding to next layer
  11. REPEAT STEPS again for WHITE layer (but this time do not add any coloring, obviously)
  12. REPEAT STEPS again for BLUE layer (but this time add BLUE coloring to desired color)
  13. Now that you have all three layers, cool slightly
  14. Cut into 18 pieces with very sharp knife
  15. Remove from loaf pan. If the treats won't stand up, just smash them down a bit to make the bottom flat.
  16. Decorate by adhering SweetWorks candy with a bit of frosting. Insert decorative toothpicks

I would love to use the Foiled Solid Milk Chocolate Balls because I think they would look very pretty in large glass vases or glass jars. This could be used for many holidays by selecting different colors of foils.

I would use the Red, White & Blue Mix Sixlets®. On cakes I would use them around the base as a border instead of piping one. This could also be done around the edge of the top. If you had enough, another option would be to use them to make a flag on the top of the cake. It would look pretty, be eye catching, and add a nice flavor to the cake.

I’d love to use the Ovation Mint Sticks. They are quite universal. They could be used whole as they are, broken in half or quartered to make other types of decorations, or even crumbled as a topping (or even snacked on in between). I think they’d be perfect!

I’d like to use the Princess Mix Sixlets because they make me think of a mermaid underwater dessert. I guess that’s not really holiday themed but those were the candies I liked the most.

I would use the 1″ gumballs, in red, white and blue to fill a clear vase and make a bouquet out of old fashioned lollipops and candy sticks.
