Declutter Challenge

January 15, 2012 By Shelley Zurek 839 Comments

Did my Life get too Cluttered?

Woman with clutter Blog Note: I have severely disappointed one of my readers, maybe more and I am sorry.  I started this declutter challenge back in Jan., 2011.  We had 3 months worth of prizes added to the pile and a nice group of readers jumped on board and participated enthusiastically.  Then my life took over (one kid graduating high school out of state plus open house, one graduating college, sick mom, another kid moved out, high school senior went to college, 2 kids got licences, a wedding, a bridal shower, yada-yada-yada! )  Anywho, I let the ball drop on this and I am sorry!  Especially to my dear reader who is upset with me.  But the challenge isn’t ruined yet…we have this month to get caught up!

So Let’s Catch up!

Anyway the deal was, you were supposed to declutter one item everyday for 365 days.  Then you were supposed to  give your input  every month into how you were doing as your entry and I would add a prize to the pile each month.  You guys did an awesome job of commenting in the first three months.

The kitchen is our hotspot because that is where we enter the house and everything that we carry nin gets set down there.

The biggest declutter job was our garage. It took three days.

My biggest clutter challenge is I can’t keep things in my home organized.

The biggest decluttering challange of the past year has been our office. It has been so bad I will not even enter the room.

If there is something you do not wear but it hangs in your closet – pass it on to someone who can wear it or donate to Goodwill.

Always file paper work in a file cabinet as you are finished with it. Don’t let it pile up because then it can be to stressful.

Keep versus throw out? I hate throwing away things that my kids have done, given me, helped pick out, etc. It just makes my heart hurt and it isn’t one of those thinkgs you can just go buy another one of if you miss it later.

I stand in my own way of decluttering – cannot focus on how to do it correctly. Try to declutter but make a bigger mess from trying. HELP! lol

For the past several weeks I have cleaned out closets and shelves and “stuff.” I made over $800 so far just selling in online yard sales on Facebook and I can’t name more than 4 things that I’m missing! The things left, I put into large boxes in the shed. After 3 months, if I haven’t gone to get anything out of those boxes they are donated. Do NOT look inside them or you’ll start wanting things out. I promise you won’t be able to name 5 things that are in those boxes!!

My husband is my biggest clutter maker. His excuse? “I left it there so you would see it.”

My favorite decluttering tip, that I’ve managed to stick with for a while now, is “Never touch papers more than once.” When it comes in the mail, deal with it now. If it needs paying, it goes in the bill drawer. Trash goes right into the trash. Phone calls are made right then and the paper filed.
