Declutter Challenge

January 15, 2012 By Shelley Zurek 839 Comments

Did my Life get too Cluttered?

Woman with clutter Blog Note: I have severely disappointed one of my readers, maybe more and I am sorry.  I started this declutter challenge back in Jan., 2011.  We had 3 months worth of prizes added to the pile and a nice group of readers jumped on board and participated enthusiastically.  Then my life took over (one kid graduating high school out of state plus open house, one graduating college, sick mom, another kid moved out, high school senior went to college, 2 kids got licences, a wedding, a bridal shower, yada-yada-yada! )  Anywho, I let the ball drop on this and I am sorry!  Especially to my dear reader who is upset with me.  But the challenge isn’t ruined yet…we have this month to get caught up!

So Let’s Catch up!

Anyway the deal was, you were supposed to declutter one item everyday for 365 days.  Then you were supposed to  give your input  every month into how you were doing as your entry and I would add a prize to the pile each month.  You guys did an awesome job of commenting in the first three months.

We actually got rid of more than 365 things when we moved, but it was a battle and we really should get rid of that much still.

I have a problem mostly with my daughter. She wants to keep everything, no matter if it no longer fits or is broken. It usually ends up as a battle with tears and arguing to get one thing thrown away.

My biggest declutter challenge is getting rid of things I love because I really have no room for them.

I usually try to only keep things that I will use in a 12 month period. If it has not been used in over a year, then I obviously don’t need it. The exception to that is family mementos such a photos and family heirlooms.

I sometimes have a hard time getting motivated to declutter, so I promise myself a treat like going out to my favorite coffee place after the job is done.

We have a new rule in our house, if you bring something new into the house, if there is not a place for it, then something old has to go into the trash or be donated to make space for the new item.

We are a family of 7 and the kids are the worst culprits of clutter and mess.

My favorite de-cluttering tip is to only attempt one space at a time or you end up being overwhelmed. I love using clear stackable storage totes to put things like holiday decorations, memorablia, craft supplies, etc. in. That way they can be stacked neatly and I can see what is in them.

Our garage is our Hotspot. It seems like everything that does not have a place gets stuck out there.

We combined two households and moved into a new house and there are boxes and clutter everywhere. We hardly know where to start. We are still trying to figure out the best way to tackle this.

Did we get rid of 365 things this year… nowhere close to that, and if we have we’ve gained more than we got rid of.

Who stands in your way of decluttering- my man lol. He’s an enabler in this respect “just sit and relax for a little bit, do it later…”

Keeping something versus throwing it out: we have a hard time throwing anything out. Someone else might want it… Daddy’s a hoarder.

I motivate myself by giving myself permission to relax later on after I get done part of the decluttering project.

Storage tip: under the bed storage is often overlooked. You can buy those plastic clothes containers especially for this and use for most anything and they can be inexpensive if you look.

My favorite decluttering tip is simple: take it one small step at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed; chip away at it.

The hottest clutter spot is our kitchen counters. All the mail, receipts, and flyers gets tossed there. Then there’s limited counter space anyway with all the small appliances we have- rice cooker, toaster, microwave and so on.
