Declutter Challenge

January 15, 2012 By Shelley Zurek 839 Comments

Did my Life get too Cluttered?

Woman with clutter Blog Note: I have severely disappointed one of my readers, maybe more and I am sorry.  I started this declutter challenge back in Jan., 2011.  We had 3 months worth of prizes added to the pile and a nice group of readers jumped on board and participated enthusiastically.  Then my life took over (one kid graduating high school out of state plus open house, one graduating college, sick mom, another kid moved out, high school senior went to college, 2 kids got licences, a wedding, a bridal shower, yada-yada-yada! )  Anywho, I let the ball drop on this and I am sorry!  Especially to my dear reader who is upset with me.  But the challenge isn’t ruined yet…we have this month to get caught up!

So Let’s Catch up!

Anyway the deal was, you were supposed to declutter one item everyday for 365 days.  Then you were supposed to  give your input  every month into how you were doing as your entry and I would add a prize to the pile each month.  You guys did an awesome job of commenting in the first three months.

What storage tip can you give others that will help them to declutter?
A ‘home’ for everythig u want to keep and the home should be near where it is used. If like tools used all over house, then all tools in one storage area. I HATE not knowing where to find something I need.

What’s the biggest factor that makes you KEEP something versus throwing it OUT?
Right now it’s keeping saleable things as money is so tight…for the summer garage sale. After that I will sort into give and throw. sentiment gets in my way also.

Who stands in your way from decluttering?
again Me, myself and I only…I would rather clean than declutter. Not proper storage. I’d like to be better organized.

How do you motivate yourself to declutter?
I use peppy fun music and when I see progress, the motivation takes over…but it sure helps when everything has a ‘home’. Otherwise..futile

favorite Decluttering Tip: 15 min timer. Even with physical issues,I can do anything for 15 min. I also like the clean sink to wake up to/ shoes and bra on before I can work seriously. lol

HOTSPOT? Kitchen table. No other flat surface for anything…so all appliances, etc are kept there…no storage in 100 yr house. Leaves not much room to work…have 3 ft of counter total

When my grandson lived with me we both contributed to the clutter. But now that I’m alone I have to take all the blame.

My best tip is get help! My son and daughter-in-law took over my cluttered areas and did a magnificent job in getting rid of things I really didn’t need (and in some cases, things I didn’t even know I had).
They were relentless in convincing me I had no need of a credit card bill from an account I no longer have, or expired medicines, and even computer games that don’t work in my current PC.

If its been sitting there untouched for months it gets tossed out. I think about if I really really need it.
