That 70s Show, can women of all ages wear 1970s Fashion?
Ahh…the 70s…When hair was fluffy, pants were belled and flared, polyester was a blessed material, “going braless” was adopted by many, and loud was okay! In truth, not much to be nostalgic about or for. If you lived, or look back at the pictures from the 1970s, you will be horrifed to find almost a whole decade of fashion disaster and experimentation. 1970s Jumpsuits, for example:
In fact, my favorite blog post of all time (from any blogger) is a eulogy of 1970s fashion. I mean, it’s not a decade that I look back on fondly.
People really did wear these kind of clothes, not just models or TV stars. Yet, TV stars really had to overdo it when they were on TV variety shows, that were so popular during that time period. Let’s just take a gander at the Brady clan:
Bands of the 70s really went to the extreme, take the 70s multi-platinum and million dollar artists ABBA. WTH?
Even ordinary people were marketed extraordinary outfits, MMMM powder blue 1970s jumpsuits!
However, the 1970s did feature some earth shattering styles that have endured through the decades. Designers on the forefront such as Halston, created some stunning designs. The top 10 trends in 70s fashion (as reported by Topyas. com) that endure to this day included:
- Platform shoes
- Jumpsuits
- Tie dyed fashion
- Floppy Hats
- Wrap Dresses
- Halter and tank tops
- Chevron Stripes
- Hot Pants
- Bell Bottoms
- Maxi Dresses
So anyway, back to my 1970s jumpsuit. It’s not looking quite so shocking anymore, is it? I want to be clear that this jumpsuit is not a recreation. It is an authentic jumpsuit of the day. It even has molded breast cups inside so it can be worn “comfortably” without a bra, if you chose. The pant leg is in the style of Halston pajama pants, high-waisted and bias cut.
The Chief Blonde strikes a classic 70s angular pose wearing a vintage jumpsuit, Calvin Klein platform cork heels () and a vintage heart necklace. Crochet Shrug from Monroe and Main c/o ($40). Also, featuring the Brigette Bardott false eyelashes provided by International Model Sheena Sujan ($19). Lashes are handmade and 100% human hair.
Sister Act Project, Act 3
I got together with a group of my fellow bloggers and we are presenting how we can showcase the “That 70s show” theme across the age groups. We are striving to show that any age, can wear any trend. The Sister Act Project was conceived by Sheela Goh for her blog Sheela Writes.

This post makes me so happy! Yes, the 70s attire was hideous, but who’s not to say that in 40 years we’ll look back on today’s wardrobes and think Ack! I find pics now of my mom in those awesome pantsuits and it all makes me grin. Now, my Dad’s leisure suit – yep, he had one with a big wide belt – those make me cringe a little.
Love this print! You look great!

You look great but I think my jumpsuit days are over! I might, however, wear Huk-a-Poos again!
I want that jumpsuit. That’s exactly what I’m looking for to wear to my niece’s wedding.
I will send it to you to wear if you wish. The Chief Blonde
I think the 70s fashions do look dated, for the most part. I like some of the updated aspects, but it wasn’t fashion’s finest era. Now, the 50s and 40s? different story!
You look very good in that jumpsuit! I’m not sure what I am more horrified by when I look at pictures from back then, the jumpsuits or the hair.
I just bought a kind of dressy jumpsuit and suddenly I’m wondering what I was thinking. They are such a pain when you have to go…
I still love the maxi dresses and the shoes.
You are totally rocking that jumpsuit! Brings me back to the days!
My favorite trend of the 1970’s in definitely bell bottoms. I love how they look and fit!
Those were the days! I am a 70’s baby! I remember all the bright funky colors and the jumpsuits! My mom used to dress me in them!
Oh my gosh what fun those pics were. Love the jumpsuit you are wearing looks fab!
Just stop! You look fabulous- I LOVE that jumpsuit on you! I am a big fan of Floppy Hats- especially over the summer, but wrap dresses and chevron are my faves right now!
Gah! You are bringing back nightmares of my high school years. Levis and hush puppies. Bell bottoms and baby doll tops. Corduroys. I always looked good from a shoulder standpoint in a halter top back when things were still perky but now – ain’t no way you’d get in one. I did have one of the original DVF wrap dresses. I loved that thing.
Your jumpsuit is the absolute cat’s pajamas, Shelley!!! I really appreciate you being a part of Project Sister Act, you are loved 🙂 xoxoxo
Thanks Sheela, I would be pleased to come back anytime. I loved the challenge. Shelley
Growing up I used to LOVE wearing my mom’s dresses from the ’70s. Sometimes it was for costume parties and sometimes just out and about. I especially loved the looooong dresses with halter tops! (I guess jumpsuits weren’t her thing because she didn’t keep any!)
I think you look fabulous in that jump suit! I love the colors. I think I’m probably a bit too wide myself to wear that sort of thing.
I don’t remember wearing those even back then. I was into bell bottom jeans though and if I could find some that fit I’d still be wearing them.
Watch out Sherry I think you are about to see an onslaught of flares. Shelley
I love halter tops. So flattering on most women. I totally had that feathered hair too. Oh, the memories! You look GREAT Shelley!
Hiphugger bell bottoms! I loved them. And, I knew that jumpsuit was your own. I didn’t keep any of my old things.
I love this jumpsuit on you! I kinda want it, actually, haha. When I think “70’s jumpsuit” I certainly don’t think of something as flattering and fun as this one! I think platform shoes are my favorite 70’s trend, but I got to re-live that trend in the 90’s and again right now, so maybe that’s why? I do also really like the boho look, with bell bottoms (so glad they’re back in fashion… I gotta make a pair soon I think!), lacy tops, long necklaces, and big floppy hats.
My mom has a photo of me in a jumper that is very similar to the pattern of your pants. I love all the bright colors they wore back then.
Ha – great throwback pictures! The Brady Bunch one is fantastic. My mom had these sequined tank tops that I think I would have liked wearing in the ’70s – one was gold.
