President Obama recently declared a National Flu emergency. What must you as a woman who is over 45 consider in regards to the swine flu? Here’s just some of the facts for women and those who are over 45 that coming to light:
- In Britian, of the swine flu-related deaths so far, 23 per cent of deaths affected those aged 45-64.
- Sceintists believe that older people may not be hit as severely by swine flu as seasonal flu, because they have had viruses similar to swine flu earlier in their life.
- People over 50 are being urged to go ahead and get the shot for seasonal flu even if the shot for swine flu is not available.
- Women are no more likely to get H1N1 than men, according tof Sharon Stanley, Chief Nurse of the American Red Cross .
- Once contracting the swine flu, more women than men needed to be hospitalized.
- Swine flu threatens those in the under 2 age bracket most severely, along with pregnant women and those individuals who have health problems like asthma and diabetes.
- More women (35%) than men have gotten the swine flu shot (26%).
- Women (60%) worry more about the safety of the H1N1 vaccine than men (44%).
- Women are significantly more likely than men to cover coughs and sneezes with tissue, wash their hands longer and more throughly, and make more frequent use of hand sanitizer.
- According to a survey released 10-23-2009 by Mansfield Communication, 94 percent of women believed that coworkers should not come into the office if infected with the H1N1 flu virus, while fewer men (88%) felt the same way
- The Mansfield Communication study further reported 84% of respondents between the ages 18-54 were likely to report a colleague who had symptoms of the flu. While fewer respondents ages 55+ and older (77%) were likely to report their coworkers’ for being ill at the office.
- Of the people who died in the early stages of the pandemic in the US, 45% were obese.
- This year’s swine flu has killed more than 1,000 people in the United States.
- As well, at the flu peak, British officials are estimating 5% of workers will be off work.
- While our fearless leaders originally promised 120 million doses of swine flu vaccine by med-October, only 13 million are available to date.
