Turmeric Curcumin Bioavailability – Why care?

July 22, 2016 By Shelley Zurek 41 Comments

Bioavailability of Curcumin and Turmeric

Today’s informational post discussion on Turmeric Curcumin Bioavailability – Why care? was brought to you by Wellness Daily Tru-Organic. Opinions are those of the Wellness Daily.

Turmeric Curcumin Bioavailability Why Care

What is Bioavailability and why should I care?

Bioavailability is a fancy word for how much of a drug or supplement your body actually absorbs. Why does this matter? Well when a drug or supplement is administered intravenously, it’s absorption is 100%. But when a drug or supplement is taken via other methods, say orally, its bioavailability tends to decrease, sometimes dramatically.

Why does the bioavailability of Turmeric and Curcumin matter?

According to Livestrong.com:

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric.

Turmeric curcumin is considered to be a very powerful, all natural anti-inflammatory that supports strong muscles and joints. Curcumin is a natural antioxidant, which defends the cells of the body from injury by free radicals and stimulates the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.

A significant issue with tumeric is curcumin’s low bioavailability. Curcumin is the major constituent of turmeric. But if the curcumin doesn’t absorb, turmeric curcumin is not effective! How can turmeric curcumin bioavailability be increased?

I’ve taken other bio-available supplements and it does make a difference, especially to those who have gut issues. I never knew Turmeric was offered bio-available. Now I do thanks to you!

I never realized that turmeric curcumin could be difficult for the body to absorb. I shall have to check my source and see if I have the type that will let me make good use of it.

If I could, I’d eat Indian curries every day. But I can’t. That said, I think I found a pretty good source of Curcumin!

This is great info. It’s so easy to take a vitamin but understanding how much your body absorbs and what it really does for you is so important!
