May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Summer is right around the corner so it’s no surprise that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The focus of the campaign is to highlight prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. In the US, each year, two million people are diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancers (mostly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas). These cancers, while highly treatable, can lead to disfigurement when left untreated. The most deadly form of skin cancer is Malignant melanoma with 57,000 diagnosed and 9000 deaths from the disease in 2008. This figure continues to rise.

I already had pinned two of these “posters” to my board.
I tan very easily, but still don’t spend much time in the sun. I have never been a sun worshiper. I had a small patch of basal cell carcinoma removed from my shoulder about 10 years ago. Probably due to exposure I received while working in the tropics for three years.
A little sun is necessary for your health, but being out mid-day when the sun is strongest isn’t necessary or wise.
Pale is the new tan! I live in California, but didn’t know that we ban minors from using tanning beds. Yay!
