Nurse practitioners provide advice for seniors to stay healthy in 2015

This “Nurse Practioners Top Ten Senior Health Tips” discussion is brought to you by Matrix Medical Network.

Nurse Practitioner Top Senior Health Tips 2015

Let’s make 2015 the year where our resolutions finally stick. Here are some valuable tips from Matrix Medical Network, providing free health assessments by Nurse Practitioners for eligible seniors, on how to have a healthy and happy 2015.

Nurse Practitioners Top Ten Senior Health Tips

EXERCISE IS KEY

  • Visit Your Doctor: Before starting an exercise program, it is important to get the “okay” from your physician.
  • Set Goals: Start off slow to build up to 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week.
  • Pay Attention to Your Body: It’s important that you listen to your body and not overdo it.
  • Adjust Your Work Out: If you notice shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, or even tender joints, you may want to touch base with your doctor.

PROPER PORTIONS

  • Plate Size: Try using a smaller plate for your food.
  • Don’t Rush: Sit down and eat your food slowly.

MENTAL WELLNESS

  • Keep Your Mind Active: Maintain intellectual and social stimulation such as discussion groups and card games.
  • Talk to a Trained Professional: Depression among older adults is very common. Talking to a counselor or psychologist is a good resource to find ways to deal with daily stress.

And two additional tips by the Chief Blonde:

CARE

  • Consider in-home care: Seniors may thrive in their own environment
  • Keep care affordable to reduce stress: in-home care is often covered at no cost to eligible health plan members.

All excellent tips for the senior members of my family. I love that in home care has become more of an option now, a few years ago it was mostly nursing home care that was all that was available.

My dad has a nurse that makes house calls every few months. For this last house call she made, she ended up sending him a 25 dollar Target Gift Card! How cool is that!?!?!?!

I think it is wonderful to have in home care!! Not only for their health concerns but for some company. Too many seniors live alone and are lonely!!

Nurses, Nurse Practitioners…are wonderful, amazing people! When my daughter was very sick, nurses were a lifesaver. Our in home np was great. Caring and respecting. She explained things and was there. They have to know and do so much, and it takes a special person to be one. I thank God that we are blessed with these special people.

I adore my Nurse Practitioner who is a Doctor of Nursing Practice. She takes exemplary care of me and a lot of our family members. she takes a lot of time with me, and listens not only with her ears, but also with her heart.

I like the in-home care suggestion.
I’d hate to have to live somewhere other than my home when I get old.
    That would make me unhappy.
    Thanks!

I love the list you have here, and its true , I think they need to take care of themselves and start allowing others to help if needed, I use to do home care for seniors, the best people to work for, why because they always have a smile to share..

I agree 100% with these tips for Seniors. I am a senior and I listen to my Body. Things are much more harder for me to get done then these were when I was younger. I sometimes feel
like my Heart is going to blow out of my chest When I over do myself I need to quit while I am ahead! I also get out of breath~ 2 signs that tell me I need to take it easy!! Thankyou for posting!!

My husband had a Health care nurse come to our house every other day to change his dressing after a surgery a Couple of years ago. This particular surgery needed to heal from inside out so changing the dressing was tricky and not an easy thing to do! She was great and I think its awesome they can come to you!!

Yes I do!! My hubbys grandma has Alzheimers and right now her hubby and family take care of her. But she is declining and I can imagine that within the next few years they will need additional assistance!! Thankfully in home options are available because she hates being anywhere else from what she knows!

These are some great tips. I especially love the ‘play cards’ tip. I think any game where you use your mind is good.
