Menopause and Urinary Tract Infections: Facts and Fiction
Previously we have written about avoiding UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) during menopause, but now I want to pass along some UTI Myths. This knowledge can help you deal better with menopause and UTIs.
- Myth 1: UTIs only happen to younger women. FACT: Perimenopaure and menopause is the time when ovaries naturally begin decreasing their production of sex hormones; “good bacteria” levels also drop. A lack of estrogen and good bacteria allows “bad bacteria” to grow more easily in the vagina or urethra. Therefore, women who have undergone menopause are at an increased risk for UTIs.
- Myth 2: UTIs are really a small problem for menopausal women. FACT: Heck no! Have you every had a UTI? They hurt like CRAZY IMO. Yes, sometimes a UTI can subside without treatment, but if you are experiencing discomfort…get it checked out. Why? Because the infection could spread to your kidneys and cause serious and permanent damage. UTIs are a big deal!
- Myth 3: I don’t have that much sex anymore, so I can’t get a UTI FACT: Having sex, no matter how infrequent, can increase your chances of a UTI. Being menopausal increases your risk factor of UTI as well. So no matter what your age, but especially if you are menopausal (another risk factore) make sure to urinate after sex.
So you have a UTI (or think you do), what next?
Make an appointment with your doctor or urgent care clinic, UTIs are treatable with a perscription antibiotic.
But wait, if you are anything like me, you always get a UTI on Friday night or the weekend, then what? You can seek relief as soon as you begin to experience symptoms and think you have a UTI with URISTAT® Pain Relief Tablets. URISTAT® Pain Relief, from the makers of MONISTAT®, contain phenazopyridine HCl, the #1 doctor recommended ingredient used to treat UTI pain or discomfort.
You can even keep using URISTAT® Pain Relief Tablets after you get your antibiotics, because trust me, the antibiotics don’t work instantly. Sometime the pain of a UTI will drive you to distraction!

Great post. I guess there is just no break for those in menopause 🙁
Thanks for the mythbusters. Luckily I’ve never had a UTI but if I do I will definitely get some Uristat.
Thank you for, this information about UTI and the mediation Uristat
I never had an UTI when I was younger but, now that I am menopausal.. I get them all of the time. They are really a pain…. My doctor says that woman were “designed wrong.”…
Great article.
Very good information. I’m going to pass this on to the women in my life!
UTI’s are no joking matter. I have had them and they are painful. I did not know these facts about UTI for menopausal women, but it makes sense because the estrogen is gone, and that helps protect the urethra. Thanks for such an informative post.
I had UTIs in my 20s & 30s but luckily haven’t had any in 30 years or so (knock on wood).
Luckily I’ve had maybe 4 UTIs all my life. Had a hysterectomy at 28 and went through menopause then. I know UTI s are so uncomfortable and sometimes painful.
Thanks for your review of Uristat. I had never heard of it until I read your review. I will be printing out the coupon and trying it out. I have always had lots of UTI’s during menopause, and even though I am done with that, I still have several UTI’s a year.
So cool that these are OTC now. I used to always have to go to the doctor. This is a lot better.
How fabulous of you, Shelley, to speak about this topic openly and factually. So many shy away from the more personal.
Thank you for all the great information. Sometimes women don’t like to talk about these things and keep it hush hush. Great to get it out in the open like this.
Thanks for the information. We don’t like to discuss these things, but can help each other when we do.
This is interesting. I did not know this about menopause and UTI’S
I am way past Menopause and I do get UTI’s. My Doc prescribes medication for me. I also have had a complete hysterectomy. Still get them. I have never tried the over the counter meds. It is definitely more convenient~ Thankyou for posting about this medication Uristat. I will give it a try~I will put the coupon to good use.
All women should be made aware of,these facts and know what to do if they have vaginal pain, discharge or itching.
Well… now there’s some info that I get to not look forward to down the road :/ Some things in life just make me wish I was a man instead lol.
Thanks for all of this valuable information. Luckily, I haven’t had to deal with this in a very long time. But, it’s great to know.
You’ve got to take care of your health down there! I think we’ve all had the itching and burning at some point!
