It Can Wait! Stop Texting and Driving!

May 27, 2013 By Shelley Zurek 17 Comments

Take the Pledge!  #ItCanWait  Can’t It?

This message is provided by me to you as a public service announcement in conjunction with Verizon  to remind you NOT to text and drive.  IT CAN WAIT!!!!   Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Voices Style program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

4.6 Seconds is all it takes.  It Can Wait!

Would you close your eyes on the road for the distance to travel a football field (100 yard)?  Did you know that in the 4.6 seconds your eyes leave the road to text while driving you travel the full length of a football field (going 55 mph)?  Wow!

I dont use a cellphone at all. I have heard texting and driving is worse than drunk driving and have seen the effects of it. A friend lost a child who was texting and driving…

I love this program and I hope that it succeeds. It Is so important for drivers not to text and drive. I love the highways where there are signs that say next stop to text is in 5 miles.

I took the pledge to not text and drive several years ago. I despise seeing people texting or even talking on the phone while driving because it takes their mind off of what they are doing. I was hit head on by an 18 wheeler in ’87 and almost lost my life because the driver of the big rig fell asleep behind the wheel after driving several hours over the limit so I am extra vigilant when it comes to people paying attention when they are behind the wheel. Whether it is texting, talking on the phone, driving impaired, driving tired or anything else….nothing is more important than the vehicles around you, period!!! Even if you are on a street by yourself with no other vehicles, you still need to have your eyes on the road and your mind clear. Sorry for the rant but this is something I am VERY passionate about lol.

I think everyone should take this pledge. Even in states where this is illegal, I hear that it has not deterred may young people from still texting and driving. It’s so horrible. I hope the behavior changes or the technology can catch up to somehow block texting while the car is moving.

I don’t text OR email while driving. If it’s that important that it MUST be sent that second, I pull over and stop the car. My kids are my #1 priority, I will not endanger them!

I don’t need the statistics to know texting and driving is a bad idea- but it boggles my mind some people still find it harmless. The big key here it to not do it- AT ALL. Texting ‘at a red light’ leads to feeling comfortable with finishing that text as you begin to accelerate, and that leads to accidents, etc. It’s dangerous enough driving with other people on the road not paying attention, why limit your chances of responding by distracting yourself as well? A great campaign from Verizon!
