Tea Tasting? What’s That?
Blog Note: How to Tea Taste, Tea Tasting with Cindi Bigelow was inspired by an all expense paid trip via a contest that I won from Bigelow Tea for writing “Around Grandma’s Table“. I was uncompensated for this post but some of the content does come from that trip.

Cindi Bigelow explains How to Taste Tea in this video
12 Steps of tea tasting
- Provide enough spoons so each participant can have two per kind of tea
- Taste one kind of tea (green or black or herbal) at a time
- Fill tea cups (5 is a good number) with various brands of one kind of tea. One brand per cup.
- Be careful that tea is not to hot. Like Goldilocks, the temperature needs to be “Just Right”
- Take a spoon in each hand
- Choose one spoon to be your “dipping spoon”
- Choose the other spoon to be your “tasting spoon”
- Dip the dipping spoon into a cup, take a spoonful of tea, pour the tea into your tasting spoon
- From your tasting spoon, slurp the tea into your mouth such that it sprays all over the inside of your mouth
- Be careful not to choke from slurping too enthusiastically
- Move on to the other cups of tea
- Do NOT MIX your spoons!

When I was little I used to wonder why my Mom’s favorite tea was called “Constant Comment” it didn’t describe how the tea tasted. Now I know why!
I’m inspired by stories of products being developed in a home kitchen, then going on to become a well-known company. It just amazes me time and again.
My mother always drank Constant Comment when I was growing up. I found it amazing that it was created in someone’s kitchen.
A woman is president….nuff said.
i grew up drinking bigelow tea and when my grandma and I went to england we made sure to buy some of the bigelow tea and bring it home with us. now we love to get together and have tea and scones and reminisce about our great trip and the 3pm tea’s we would have together in england.
I like how he continued the tea that was created by his mother
I love that this was created in a woman’s kitchen!
Amazing that his mother created Constant Comment so many years ago…never realizing what a hit this tea would be. It is one of my favorites!
Ruth Bigelow created Constant Comment over 60 years ago in her kitchen.
Isn’t this what we think of when we hear the term AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY. In financial difficulty a couple starts a food business. Great.
I love to see and buy from family companies that have been around for years and are still going.
Love that they are a family owned company – there are so few of them out there anymore!! America was built on family owned companies!!
I like that the co-chair’s mother created Constant Comment. That’s the only tea my grandmother ever brewed, and she made it into iced tea. It’s wonderful, and brings back fond memories of her every time I drink it!
The Story Behind Constant Comment
Join David C. Bigelow, Co-Chair of Bigelow Tea, as he tells the story of how Constant Comment tea was created by his mother, Ruth Campbell Bigelow, over 60 years ago. Created in her kitchen in 1945, Constant Comment is truly an American classic. It has been loved by generation after generation of tea drinkers. And, most importantly, each and every tea bag is overwrapped and sealed in a stay fresh foil packet so that all the goodness and classic flavor is protected until you get ready to have a cup of tea.
Because I’ve been drinking it for 50+ years.
Thanks for the contest.
I always wondered how my favorite tea “Constant Comment” was named — it was named for the constant comments Mrs. Bigelow got about how much people loved the tea!
What a clever way to acquire a name! Constant Comment will always be close to my heart – I grew up watching my parents spend winter afternoons with a cup of hot tea, and Constant Comment was a favorite.
I love tea I have since I was a child.
Created in her kitchen 60 years ago still made with love
Constant Comment is my daughter’s favorite tea. It’s interesting that the original blend of flavors dates back to colonial times.
Constant Comment has been so loved by generation after generation. My Grandmother made it, my Mom always had a tin of it and now I enjoy it, as do both of my daughters…and when they have kids I’m sure it will become part of their lives too!
