Facebook announces: Video chat with Skype, Group Chat, And new Chat design

July 6, 2011 By Shelley Zurek

Today at 1:00pm EST, Facebook announced it’s Latest Product Offering

Facebook Logarithm

So what is the announcement? Video Skype like app?  Video Chat?

They announced:

1. Group Chat–ad hoc chat.  Get a group together.  Similar to Hangout on Google+1

2. New Design–new chat design.  Billions of messages going through Chat a day.  No really good way to do this.  Takes into account browser size.  One click access. Also rolling out sophisticated Chat app.

3. Video Calling–partnering with Skype.  Click call, and in real time, click chat and can start chatting.  Video apps can just flow across the system.  Rolling out today.  Via chat tab or Via friends Profile page.  They demoed it.  Just click, “Call”.  WIll be able to see you and the chatter.  Millions already have this feature!  GO FOR IT!  NOTE:  There is no capability for Group chat–yet!

Want to get Video Chat before everyone else?  Go to the Facebook Blog to get Video Chat now!

Other things Mark Zuckerberg said today: What kind of cool Stuff can you build?  What kind of wireless infrastructure?  It’s about who the active users are.  Who is using your structure?  Seem to be talking a lot about measurement.

An underlying trend–the rate of sharing is increasing.  Look at plot–growing exponentially.  About twice what they shared a year ago.  Gives the example of folding a peice of paper 50 times is actually as tall as 10 times to the moon and back and parellels that to the amount each person is sharing.  You really need to look at this on an Logarithmic graph.  He compares Facebook sharing to Intel, so FB needs to figure out what kind of apps will be needed in the future so they can start building for it now.

Mark on Google+1–A lot of companies, will be coming forward with apps.  With the social infrastructure in place, many will try to build some of their own.  This is the way the next 5 years will build out.
