Easter Sculpture : Capturing the Meaning of Easter in Art

March 31, 2013 By Shelley Zurek 6 Comments

The Empty Tomb–What Easter Means To Me

Chirst appearing to Mary Magdalene_unknown

Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene, Artist UnKnown.

Sorry NO BUNNIES!

No Painted Eggs? No little fluffy Chickies?  No Sweets?  No Easter Manicures? NO!  It’s not that I think there is anything wrong with that…it’s just not what Easter MEANS to me.  When I reflect upon Easter, Christianity’s Holiest Holiday remembering the Death and Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ…I think of one thing!  THE EMPTY Tomb.

The Easter Sculpture above represents Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene, who along with other women, visited Jesus’s tomb to prepare his body for burial.  In John 20:16 , “Jesus said to her, “Mary.”    She turned toward him and cried out.

Can’t you just see that in her face in the above work of art?   She is stunned, overjoyed, shocked, relieved…all at the same moment.  I am like Mary to a degree.  Stunned that Jesus gave up his life for us, stunned that God gave up His only Son for us and amazed to see Him again on Easter but immensely relieved.

He is RISEN …Hallelujah

I wrote about all parts of Easter, but this is the reason. This is the meaning and the feeling. You can just feel the power of the season and the love. Thank you. It is amazing the power of the “Mary.” We are blessed.

Quite true Sherry. And my dad’s minister further amplified this passage today but noting that Mary finally recognized his voice because he is the good shepherd and Sheep recognize the voice of their masters. The CHief Blonde

I googled Happy Easter last night looking for a pic for my facebook and all I got was bunnies. It has become like Christmas in that the real meaning is forgotten. It saddens me. Have a wonderful Easter day my friend =D
