The Chief Blonde Remarks: I swear after looking at this book, I feel that Barbie just had to have been inspired by Marilyn and William Travilla Designs.  This book is truly eye candy that you and your visitors (who grab it from your coffee table, will look at again and again.  It’s just so fascinating to see how Travilla accentuated Marilyn’s beauty and natural sexiness with the absolute perfection in design.  Marilyn knew how to move and pose and present herself but William Travilla knew how to provide the vehicle for Marilyn to emphasize.  William Travilla was one of the most sought-after designers of Hollywood’s Golden Age, creating outfits for Jane Russell, Paul Newman, Judy Garland, and Lauren Bacall, and earning an Oscar in 1949 for his work in Adventures of Don Juan.  But his most famous client was undoubtedly Marilyn Monroe.

In Dressing Marilyn: How a Hollywood Icon Was Styled by William Travilla (Applause Books, $29.99), Andrew Hansford takes fans of Hollywood glamor and fans of fashion back in time. Dressing Marilyn features previously unseen material, including original sketches, patterns, and costume test shots, along with insights from lost interviews with Travilla that reveal the fashion secrets of a Hollywood goddess.

I just adored this book.  The glamour was the component that struck me.  Not matter how great the gowns that starlets wear today…nothing can match the grandeur of Hollywood’s Golden Age and certainly, Marilyn Monroe and William Travilla pooled their assets to create a brilliant partnership.  I highly recommend this book for Women over 45, anyone who adored Marilyn Monroe, followers of fashion, and others who enjoy the 50s and early 60s era.  (Dressing Marilyn: How a Hollywood Icon Was Styled by William Travilla  Details: April 2012, $29.99,  Hardcover,  ISBN: 978-1-55783-846-9, 192 pages,  8.5” x 11” ,  200 color and b&w photos throughout,

I think the red and black one with the high slit at the leg, or the black print one with the pink print inside….what gorgeous dresses.

if i were to wear any from the video, i’d probably wear the well-known white one. i love the sketch of the gold one, there’s also a casual knee-length sketch that i don’t think we saw an actual image of that i’d like to see. sexy but not all hanging out there.

I love the one that looked like a blue ombre. It fit in the right places and was a beautiful color for her hair and skin tone.

I love the red dress that is cut down to the waist as it is a dress that only she could pull off.

It’s wonderful to be able to have someone design a dress for you. Marilyn had what you call the hour glass figure that not all of us have. She could wear anything that covered her hips and showed off her tiny waist. I’m short waisted so I couldn’t ever wear any of those gowns. Boo Hoo. I liked the gold dress the best though all the gowns and costumes looked wonderful on her.

I’m a HUGE marilyn monroe fan and my favorite dress is and always will be white dress. When I think of her I think of NY and her dress flying up in the air! I have a huge poster of that picture along with several other pictures and love it!
