1000 Places To See

1000 Places to See Before you Die by Patricia Shultz ($19.95)

still blondeThe Chief Blonde Remarks: 1ooo Places to See before you Die , the New Full Color Second Edition, (Workman paperback/hardcover, 19.95/32.95) by Patricia Schultz.  I bought the first edition of this book for a family friend who is widely traveled.  When he first opened it, he kind of scoffed at it, being so well traveled I don’t think he felt that it would be up to his intellectual level.  Later, his wife told me that he that he spent over 1/2 a day pouring over the book, marking all the places in it that he had been and  yelling to her in the kitchen telling her where he still wanted to go.  Pretty impressive for a man who has probably been to 50% of the books content right?

That’s the Thing about a book like 1000 Places to See Before you Die.  It’s a book for everyone.  Graduates can use it to plan out the places they will go before marrying or having kids.  A young couple can peruse it to figure out places they might want to live or backpack through.  A single parent can choose locations that will work in cities along the way to an ultimate vacation location.  Families can scan it by world region, country and city to zero in on travel plans.  Techy minded people can utilize the accompanying website 1000places.com and the new Ipad app (downloadable at the apple Itunes store for $3.99).  A business traveler or accompanying spouse can use 1000 Places to See Before you Die to locate a one day highlight in a city where they are visiting.  A child can enjoy the 600 full color pictures and maps.  A true reader or a travel bug will cherish the colorful writing of Patricia Shultz, a veteran travel journalist and now a #1 New York Times Best selling author as a result of this book!

I had a chance to use 1000 Places to see Before you Die  when traveling recently in Baltimore, Maryland.  I took the book with me.  When I got to the Baltimore area, I pulled it out, looked up Maryland and found there were 3 possible locations that I could go in the state.  On pg. 802-803, the book recommended Faidley’s in the Lexington Market and Obrycki’s in Fells Point–two different restaurants which served “the best” crab cakes Maryland had to offer.  Faidley’s, located in the Lexington market was certainly all the fun and exotic Maryland vibe that anyone could hope for, with tables that you stood at to dine on crabcakes fit for a king!  I met my friend Nadine there and we had a grand ole time!  Oddly enough, Obrycki’s had closed but Fell’s Point,  the historic Baltimore neighborhood where it had previously existed,  was certainly a treasure.

I know that men would enjoy this book for Father’s day or a Grad for graduation.  As a coffee table book, 1000 Places to See Before you Die is a scene stealer and a conversation starter because as you thumb through the book,  you recall memories of places visited or dream dreams of venues you long to see.  The accompanying Ipad app appeals to me as well,  because it’s so visually stimulating and incredibly interactive.  1000 Places to See Before You Die is one of my favorite Non-fiction books of all time.  Highly Recommend.
