You thought you knew me but…10 things you don’t know
1. In high school, I played the bassoon…really poorly
I switched from the flute to the bassoon because I was last chair flute and I don’t do “Last Chair” very well. Plus, as a bassoonist, I got to sit in the second row with the brass players (ie. guys) which was A LOT better than sitting in front row with a bunch of girls who could were WAAAAAY better than me.
2. Julia Child is my hero
Okay, this might not be a huge secret, given that I have wrote about her here, here and here. She is “More Tigger, and Less Eyore” and I love that about a person.
3. I wear size 8.5 shoes
So if you want to start sending me presents, you know what size to buy. This is one of my Instagram photos. ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME? Would love the extra attention!
4. My hair was is really blonde
My hair was blonde in my childhood and has always been blonde throughout my life. I can’t see me ever not being blonde…gray only exists on the walls of my home (see #5 below)
5. My favorite paint color is Sherwin William Zurich White
Why do I love this Sherwin Williams Zurich white? Several reason actually.
First, I love gray. LOVE IT! Even though it’s falls in Sherwin Williams White family, it is actually a lovely light gray. I goes with every color under the sun.
Second, I have lived in Zurich Switzerland for 4.5 years when my kids were young. It seemed a natural color to choose. Plus, I am of Swiss heritage, as well. SO it’s really a ancestral thing…sort-of. My kitchen, pantry, bathroom, bonus room, and half of the basement are painted this color.
My last name is Zurek, pronounced just like Zurich…so duh.
6. When I was a tween, I raced in the Soap Box Derby
That’s me on the left modeling those snappy cupcake glasses that were so popular at the time! The EEK feeling you are experiencing right now, is EXACTLY how you will feel when you look at your photos in ten years and see yourself in those hipster glasses. Just so you know.
7. One of my bucket list items: Experience every kind of transportation
For example, I have been on an elephant, donkey, horse, carriage, train, small plane, jet, ship, boat, row boat, pontoon, hover craft, hot air balloon, bike, motorcycle, mini-bike, car, dump truck, semi-truck, earth mover, tractor, mail truck, back hoe, bulldozer, bicycle, tricycle, stilts, cog wheel train, train, street car, bus, trolley, double decker bus, cable car, snow mobile, 4 wheeler, soap box derby, ski lift, skis, roller coaster, people mover, moving sidewalk, elevator, escalator, sled, toboggan, saucer, and probably oodles more that I can’t recall. I have yet to ride on a fire truck, camel, race car, rickshaw, helicopter, sleigh, or a Segway. How about you? What did I miss?
8. Growing up, I wanted to be a librarian
But hey, now I am a super model so… (see all my outfits)
9. I have an MBA from the University of Chicago
Wow, all this AND blonde hair…
10. I used to work in Industry
In the past, I have worked for GM (Production, Marketing and Labor Relations) and with Seco Tools (Industrial PR consulting). I believe that US Manufacturing is the engine that makes our country great. I think this video from GE explains the value of industry to the world. Watch this video, A Game of Inches, from GE and visit their “Game of Inches” site, as well.

This is a Fashionista Event.

I’m also an 8.5!
Wow! I learned a lot about you from reading this! I played the viola in school, but then switched to percussions (I was good at the bells, because I had played piano for years) and was always outnumbered by boys. It had it’s draw backs though, because they always thought of me as “one of the guys”…plus my older brother was on the drumline, so that didn’t help. Haha.
Add a sled and sleigh to your list!
Kim W. I have been in a sled but not sure about a sleigh! That’s a good one. Must add both!
Whoa!! This is all so fun!! I love that you did this and let us into your life!! Yay for being blonde!! Im pretty jealous youve ridden an elephant! One of my dreams!! You should probably add a whale to your list 😉
Now how the heck would I pull off a whale Amber? Seaworld? lol The Chief Blonde
This was very interesting. I thought you had probably always been blonde.
I love your bucket list…I don’t think I have ever seen anyone with that one before. Congrats on being so educated too! I am thinking of going back to college to get my masters degree.
Do it Terri, you won’t regret it.
Wow, there’s a lot I didn’t know about you. I don’t see skateboard, skates, roller blades, and canoe on your list of modes of travel. Thank you for sharing.
The soap box derby picture is really neat!
I’m a blondie too! Have been all my life and like you, can’t imagine being anything else. I’ve never done any highlights or color.
I really enjoy reading these kinds of posts about favorite bloggers, authors, celebrities.
Growing up, I wanted to be a florist — no idea why. But my dream still is to live within short walking distance of a library, one of my favorite places.
I love this type of blog post. I like getting to know the bloggers I read regular. I like that you want to travel on all sorts of transportation. I bet it makes visiting new places fun- a way to seek out adventure. I can’t believe you’ve never been on a helicopter, though! You must do it! It’s fun!
really great blog to get to know. it’s fun to read and very nicely maintained.
I enjoyed reading about you and did you win any of the soap derby races? In wanting to ride all means of transportation you didn’t mention a scooter or subway/monorail.
Thanks for the info love your blog
Thanks so much Rochelle! The Chief Blonde
No, it is not a huge secret that Julia Child is your hero. And I already knew that your real hair color is blonde. Thank you for sharing this info.
You totally rock, Shelley, and your “in the know” blog post shows that even more! Where did get your fashion-sense from?
Ahhh you are so sweet! It was developed over the years I guess and reading lots of magazines! The Chief Blonde
Well you ARE a super model and fierce one, so much cooler than a librarian, and it pays better too, I’m sure! How adorable is that Soap Box derby photo?! Hmmm, I’ve been reading for years so I feel like I really know you- this is tough, when you had your children, who got to pick the names- did you and Walt argue over it, or did you put your foot down as a Mom? Did you always have names picked out for your kids (as in before you knew you would have them?)
Well my two kids aren’t Walt’s and Walt’s two kids aren’t mine (biologically). But my former spouse and I basically just agreed on the names as ones we loved for Benjamin and Kelly.
Why the bassoon? I played the clarinet really badly so we have woodwinds in common.
I switched to the bassoon because a) my band director needed one b) I knew it would get me into first band c) I hated being a flute player.
Love seeing the pictures of you growing up. Since your so on top of fashion what is your favorite fashion trend for 2015.
I have several…I would say flatforms (platform sandals that are essentially flat), embroidered dresses, and turtle necks for spring.
I love getting to know bloggers thru these posts. How tall are you?
I am 5′ 4″ Candy! Shelley
Thanks for sharing!
