Visual Summary of Changes to Facebook Pages–Quick Review and Guide

February 11, 2011 By Shelley Zurek

Facebook Pages Updated?  Downgraded? Frustrated YET?

The recent Facebook Page updates have left many Page owners frustrated, begging for some obvious changes, and very happy about some of the long awaited tweeks!

Here’s a wonderful summary (I got permission to use) from Involver.com, an excellent site which I am now following on Facebook.  The page administrator is great about answering questions and helped me get my Facebook  pictures to the right size on the new picture strip on my Page!  (96 x67 or that ratio)

facebook page changes

1-Photo strip above the Wall (with the most recent photos you posted or tagged)..Pictures Need to be 96 x67 or that ratio to fit exactly. These constantly rotate.  My opinion is admins should be able to choose, in order, the pictures they want.

2-Tabs move over to the left panel, in the form of a list (maximum of 6 above the fold).  A lot of people are angry about this.  Doesn’t affect me so much.
3-Profile picture reduced from 200 x 600 pixels to 180 x 540.  My Pictures  already worked fine  but I will be resizing to get the an even longer length…why not…hmm maybe I’ll add my latest Giveaway into that as well?
4-Blurb box that was below the Page picture moved to info tab.  I don’t care for the removal of this information to the Info tab.  It was a nice little way to pitch your website/blog and it was clickable.  Now someone has to find your info tab, click into it, then find your information.  Wonder how many people will actually do that?  NOT!
5-Pages can Like other Pages, not just favorite them.  WOW, Admins have been waiting for this one FOREVER!
6-Featured Pages and Admins–Nice, I think it will be good for blogs to use it for sponsors.
7-Page category–This is especially good for websites, pages, blogs, or anyone who mislabeled themselves originally.
8-Choice for Wall posts between “Everyone” and Page posts only–This is the only way to get the posts in chronological order for the public to see but then eveyone but the admin’s posts are removed.  CHANGE this facebook.  Admins and readers want it!
9-Mutual Friends and Interests section–Sort of interesting, need more evaluation time on this one.
10-Ability to interact on Facebook as your Page–THIS IS THE BOMB!  THE BEST!  LOTS OF SPAMMING WILL RESULT FROM THIS ONE AND ALREADY HAS!
11-Ability for admins to post and comment around the site under their Page’s alias.   This change is the powerful change of all.  However, LOTS OF SPAMMING WILL RESULT FROM THIS ONE AND ALREADY HAS!
12-News feed of updates from Liked Pages–Oh this one is fun.  When you are signed in your page, you can then go to your wall and its the news feed for your Page not your personal profile.
13-Pages can now feature iFrame tab applications–this one is something I need to better understand
14-Email notifications when users post or comment–I didn’t opt for this one.  Might be good to switch it when I am traveling

Note, very important: You can preview the new layout but once you upgrade, there is no way to revert back to the old design.  Everyone is going to have to switch by March 10 anyway!

Well what do you think?  Any questions? I have researched this a lot.  Maybe I can help you!

Thank for the info about the new changes. I am in the process of building my blog and am so confused about the changes. Do you know much about the new Like Box? I can’t seem to get it to show up on my blog. Only a blank white box shows up. 🙂

Denise, I checked your FB page. The Like box (unless you are talking about something different) looks perfectly normal to me when I go to your page!

It’s my Blog that I am having trouble with. I can’t get the Like Box to show up there in my sidebar even though I am following going through the motions for the like box setup doing exactly as instructed on Facebook. I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. It’s like their HTML code is faulty. A big white box shows up in my sidebar where the Like Box with the wall posts should be. I guess I have a lot to learn.

I don’t use the facebook like box as I find it makes my blog hang-up. I use an inpost facebook thingy. SO I can’t help..sorry.

    Thanks for this breakdown.
I definitely agree with you in that my biggest gripe is the removal of the info text box under your pic. I really hope they will change their mind on that particular “improvement”. Better question, do you know of anywhere effective to complain?
Personally, I love that I now get email notification when some one posts or responds. No more missing it when someone responds to an older link, or posts on the “others” tab.

Oh and I stumbled you, my post is

Hey Deanna, I stumble all the posts so I will be by to stumble yours.
No great place to complain. I have been to every facebook page , “all facebook”, “Mari Smith”,”Facebook Pages”, etc. 1000s of complaints–no response. I think just a huge outcry is the only way to get this fixed. However, not necessarily because people have been complaining about many of these changes for years and they are now JUST fixing them…soooo.

Fans can’t suggest your page to friends anymore right? I wasn’t 100% sure on this.

    • stillblondeafteralltheseyears says

      February 13, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Yes Stacie, fans can still suggest your pager to friends. The button has moved I believe. It is now down on the left hand side at the bottom of the list of all items. I tried it on your page (with Shelley Zurek as the fan) without pushing the button. But if I would have, I would have shared it with all my personal fans. I can also see the share button on my own page when I am there as myself, so you should be able to as well. Frustrated yet? I was getting such incredible traffic with my page, now with these last two changes…nothing. Dead…

  17. Sonya - Belly Charms says

    February 12, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Thanks for sharing this on Belly Charms wall. Still a page can like a page, but it does NOT really like it as far as numbers go. Pages liking pages do not effect the number of fans. People liking pages is the only way for the fan number to go up. I don’t like this one. If I can be Belly Charms when posting, the Belly Charms should be able to like someone and count as a fan in their total…just saying. Thanks again!!! Great info.

  18. Cara (aka Temberton) says

    February 12, 2011 at 8:45 pm

As usual, FB changed what they wanted to and gave us very little choice in the matter. Some of the changes are great; some, not so much! I happen to love that I receive emails because my page was not getting any comments until recently. Since I was not used to getting comments, I’d forget to check for them. I just spent an hour the other night going through my page and responding to comments that dated back to mid-January. LOL! Most of it is from hops, but I still like to RESPOND in a timely manner.

I do NOT like having the picture tab across the top, especially on my fan page. The page is for my BLOG, not my personal stuff and I don’t like having personal pics posted up there. Grrr!

Overall, I’ll have to get used to it like I always do. LOL!

Thanks for the information. It was helpful.

My biggest complaint, as you read, is the chrono thing.

I agree with you that I HATE that they removed that little comment box – it was a nice way to post your website and a little blurb about what is going on lately or something.
And I HATE that you can’t view “everyone’s” posts in chronological order. It is VERY annoying.
Hmm… other things – where are my fans? I used to be able to see them on the sidebar.

    • stillblondeafteralltheseyears says

      February 20, 2011 at 7:51 am

Hi Julie, I just can’t stand the fact that things are not in chrono order. I wish complaining to others helped, but Facebook has us handcuffed.
