THE DOVE: Patch Experiment
Dove developed a beauty patch called the RB-X Beauty Patch and asked women to try it. Dr. Ann Kearney-Cooke (Ph.D., Counseling Psychology) guided the experiment. Dr. Kearney-Cooke is also a New York Times best-selling author. She has a thirty year career which encompasses conducting scientific research around women’s body image and self-esteem.
Participants were encouraged by Dr. Kearney-Cooke to wear a custom-made “beauty patch” for two weeks. The patch was supposed to help them feel more beautiful. Each women was to keep a video diary for two weeks.
Beauty Patch Results?
All the women agreed that wearing the “beauty patch” helped to improve their self-esteem and to change their personal lives in ways that they had not imagined.
So WHAT did the Dove: Patches contain?
The “beauty patch” contained nothing. The women utilized the power of believing to feel more beautiful.
“When a woman feels beautiful, she radiates happiness and confidence, which inspires her life in a significant way,” said Dr. Kearney-Cooke. “These women, like so many others, struggle to recognize their own beauty and it severely affects their daily lives. This ground-breaking experiment was designed to illustrate that beauty is a state of mind and that the power to feel beautiful comes from within.”

Self Esteem: The greatest gift a parent can give
I always believe my parents gave me a healthy dose of self esteem. I am so very blessed, I know. I would say I have less trouble recognizing my own beauty than some of my blogger friends. I am not talking only about outer beauty but beauty of the soul and character. Believe in your own beauty, believe you can bring that beauty to others. You are worthy. You matter.
If your parents didn’t impart this message to you, consider giving yourself a “beauty patch” today. As Glinda from the Wizard of Oz told Dorothy:

Unfortunately people, especially women and girls, have low self-esteem. They believe the worst about themselves. I like how Dove tries to promote real women. We all need to realize that we have power, we are special, and we are beautiful! Today is hagfish day. I hadn’t heard of this, but the hagfish is a “beauty challenged” very slimy critter. The day is to remind us of the importance and beauty in all things. Including ourselves.

Very interesting . I like this campaign . True many women do not feel enough self esteem. We need to take pride in ourselves for what we do as woman. I love Dove products too .

Love this campaign! and coming from one who struggles with severe anxiety. I know its all a mind game, though its very hard to learn to control your mind. I struggle with anxiety issues not necessarily self esteem but I truly think it all comes down to controlling your mind.
I’ve been a big supporter of this kind of thinking my whole life. Only you can make yourself beautiful in your eyes- and that confidence does transform the way others see you too. But, in the end, what you see in yourself is really more important than what anyone else could ever perceive.

I definitely need to apply a heavy dose of the beauty patch in my life. Great post.
I have to say one thing for my parents – as bad as they were as parents – they never let me feel less than beautiful, and more importantly they made sure to remind me that I was smart.
This is a tough situation to wrap your heard around. One one hand no damage is being done by giving and having the woman wear the ‘beauty patch’ but on the other hand, tricking woman into thinking they’re wearing something to enhance how they feel about themselves might have the opposite affect.
Regardless low self esteem IS a problem among many woman. I certainly do hope that this experiment helped woman realize they alone have the power to make themselves feel beautiful 🙂

The power of positive thinking is SO real!…but man I find those women gullible if they think a beauty patch exists!
I found them gullible too Christi. So that takes away the authenticity for me.
I’d love to lie to myself into being a better prouder me. It is a sorta genius. On a different note, I think I need to just start scheduling beauty time – that makes me feel super good about myself
You most definitely do, and I appreciate that. It’s still a tough perspective/perception to get rid of.
Well, I wish I had tried this patch before finding out that it contains nothing. I know that you had a different intention with this post, but unfortunately I do have a real problem with low self-esteem. I don’t know how to overcome that but just willing myself to do so is hard. I know I have no reason to feel that way, but it’s tough getting past that mindset.

I love the Dove Campaigns. They really get at the heart of the issue in the US where so many women don’t feel good enough about themselves. This was another eye-opening experiment on their part.
