As Retirement Approaches
This time of year brings about many changes. A old year draws to a close, a new year starts. Ahhh, a fresh start, for many that fresh start means retirement.
Retirement! From the time we start working, we fantasize about it. As we get 10 or 20 years into work, we start saying “When I retire…”. As the actual date is facing us, many often approach the moment with a bouncing glee, similar to how Tigger approaches life in Winnie-the-pooh. Yet there is a bit of Eyore (also of Winnie-the-pooh fame) in all of us…”We’re never going to make it, I just know it!”
I think some of our trepidation emanates from the fact, that retirement is such a big unknown. You almost need to take several courses just figure out all the topics you have to tackle. In truth, there is so much unknown that you don’t even know what to ask. Areas that need addressing before retirement include:
- Do I have a pension and will it cover my living expenses?
- Do I need to continue working in a different job?
- Do I need to move from my current house?
- What will I do about health care?
- How do I deal with inflation?
….and the list just goes on and on. For many of the questions, you just don’t know, what you don’t know.
