May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Summer is right around the corner so it’s no surprise that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The focus of the campaign is to highlight prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. In the US, each year, two million people are diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancers (mostly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas). These cancers, while highly treatable, can lead to disfigurement when left untreated. The most deadly form of skin cancer is Malignant melanoma with 57,000 diagnosed and 9000 deaths from the disease in 2008. This figure continues to rise.

Each year, a blogger I try to post about the Skin Cancer Awareness cause in May. As Blog readers and Bloggers, I am asking you to do your part to Stop Skin Cancer. You can protect yourself by avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and staying out of tanning beds. When you must be in the sun, cover up, wear and reapply sunscreen, and don’t forget your hat. I have had many moles removed and some have been tested as abnormal!! I am only 30…but was addicted to the sun and tanning beds!! Knowledge is power!!
I have had skin cancer three times. I have ruined my skin. Being fair with little pigmentation, I just fried in the sun in the 60’s. We never used sun screen, just reflectors and baby oil! At best, I put on sun tanning lotion. Who knew? My mother would tell me to “burn in the sun” if my skin broke out. It is pitiful.
At least one of my children knows better. He uses sun screen religiously. Still working on my daughter, an ardent tanner. She hasen’t learned.

Actally no, you can just put the pinit button on your toolbar in chrome or firefox. They you can pin on any site! Very cool and easy

When I was getting my degree (in midlife) I was waiting for class to begin when one of my eyes started to sting. The sunscreen had somehow made it in there (it happens). A classmate asked why I was blinking and wiping tears off my cheek. Sunscreen, I explained.
She snorted. “Who wears SUNSCREEN in the winter?”
“Anyone who’s had skin cancer,” I replied.
She apologized, but when I told her she ought to think at least about buying a moisturizer with sunscreen in it she dismissed the idea immediately. She likes the sun, she said, and she likes being tan.
I was the same way at her age. Unfortunately.
Isn’t it ironic that the worst times for being in the sun are exactly the times most people are laying around on the beach and by the pool?
This is a great article in regards to the dangers of tanning beds and tanning in general, and I agree, anyone under the age of 18 has absolutely NO place in a tanning bed!
Great information and very important reminders about skin cancer. It’s very hard to resist the pressure to be tan, and I say that as someone who pretty darn pale. 🙂 One technical issue: the box for sharing on stumble upon, FB, etc. blocks part of the text on my screen — very frustrating!
Thank you for the important reminders. My father died of melanoma so I am passionate about spreading the word and helping others become more aware of the dangers of sun exposure, etc. I also live “at the shore” so the reminders are also good for me!
