Facial: Doctor’s Office Versus Spa, Women over 45, Which is Right for You?

March 9, 2010 By Shelley Zurek

Terri N.–A Beautiful 50-Something Woman Who Favors Doctor’s Office Facials

Recently, the Chief Blonde and Blogger at Still Blonde after all these Years was contacted by the Peer Group to present an explanation of Doctor’s office facials versus Spa facials.  I thought this was a topic that you readers would enjoy.  I insisted that we have pictures and comments from a woman over 50, someone like us, who we could feature by showing her results and feelings.

But a facial is just a facial right?  The treatment that you get at a spa is much different than one you would get in a Doctor’s office.  The “medical facial” has become increasingly popular to treat fine lines, wrinkles, rosacea and other problems that both women and men face.

The Peer Group Center for Plastic Surgery in Florham Park, NJ gives you the scoop on the real difference between a spa facial and a “medical facial” and which one is best for you:

Doctor’s Office
Spa

What you get:  Doctor office treatments are physician exclusive treatments that are performed under a physician’s supervision and include prescription strength treatments and products.  Doctor offices perform skin care treatments.  Physician-Exclusive Peels include Micropeels, Micropeel Plus and Microdermabraision.  These treatments address find lines, brown spots, age spots, acne, skin imperfections and photo-aged skin, stimulating cellular renewal.  In addition to assisting with the correction of skin concerns, they also help preserve healthy skin and aid the prevention of future skin damage and aging.

What you get:  If you’re looking for a relaxing facial treatment then a spa is the right place for you.  While at a spa, cosmetologists will treat you with hydrating facials, anti-aging facials and acne facials, using luxurious lotions and aromatherapy products.  But you will not get a physician to come and speak to you about your skin concerns and what prescription-strength products can help.  Nor will you get an attentive Doctor who is able to spot trouble signs (like a questionable birthmark or beginning signs of rosacea).

Pros:
· Performed under physician supervision
· Variety of facial services available
· Physician-strength products target skin care issues.
·  Exclusive physician-only treatments available
Cons:
· May not be as “relaxing” as a spa treatment.
Pros:
· Relaxing, aromatherapy treatment available
· Variety of facial services available

Cons:
· Is not performed under physician supervision
Terri N. added, “ … medical facials has taken years off my skin.  I am able to talk with the doctor after my treatments and monitor my skin’s imperfections up to the minute which allows me to be able to reverse sign of damage almost immediately.  I wish I knew about medical facial when I was 20… I would have been coming all along!”
