In the US, the 45th parallel crosses 11 states, (Oregon, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine) and would take about 65 hours non-stop to drive, a distance of 3700 miles. What a fun trip to drive!
Walt risks life and limb to hang out in the median of I-75 Northbound at the sign marking the 45th Parallel North.
Just like in Gaylord, MI, along I-75 North, where Walt and I stopped, across the US the 45th parallel North is marked in many places on highways by a sign proclaiming that the location is halfway between the North Pole and the Equator.

North Powder OREGON is a small little town on 45th parallel. It’s not a well-known place. It’s in eastern part of the state, almost an hour and half or so from the Idaho border on I84. There’s a nice ski resort near by and has a decent Cafe.
The facts that Fort Montgomery (Ft. Blunder ) wasn’t mentioned in this is odd … I believe it was built (supposedly) on 45th latitude strategically… it was in fact a screw up and built in the Canadian side of Border .. Rouses Point & Champlain,NY are the only two
Small border towns that run along 45th .. Alburgh , VT also adjoins across the bridge of Lake Champlain. Check its history. Mind
Blowing.
We visited the 45/90 marker at Poniatowski, Wisconsin. There are only four of those on the planet. Two are in the ocean, and one in Xinjiang, deep in the Gobi. Someone in the Degree Confluence Project got to the last one– 20 years ago.
By the way, the 45th is only the halfway line going by air. Due to the shape of the Earth, an “oblate spheroid”, the halfway line going by land is between nine and ten miles north of that. As the 45th leaves the US for a bit and reenters later, so does this more northern line leave Wisconsin for four (land) miles of Michigan before returning to Wisconsin, across Green Bay. (The bay, not the city.) The 45th itself doesn’t do this.
That’s quite a trip. I’ve been to all those states but not along the 45th.
I want to be you and walt when I grow up! You two look as if you are enjoying the heck out of this chapter of your lives.
It’s true ALice. We enjoy every moment. Shelley
