Beauty Bad Deals–What works and Doesn’t– Women over 45!

Shop Smart helps us to Decide what Beauty Deals to Avoid

The chief Blogger received a review sample of this Magazine and was quite impressed. Here’s a sampling of their honest advice. I was glad to read it–there was some items that I had been considering buying–but won’t now!

Frizzy hair, skinny lips, skimpy lashes, lumpy thighs – for every dilemma, there’s a product that’s claimed to solve it. But many don’t, and lots of us have been suckered into buying stuff that doesn’t work. The March 2010 issue of ShopSmart, from the publishers of Consumer Reports, gives us the lowdown on bad beauty deals:

Lash Growers

Lash growers are regulated by the FDA as drugs. (Latisse is FDA approved, but ShopSmart doesn’t recommend it because of risks.) You’ll still see plenty of other “lash lengtheners” on the market though. Some have been issued warning letters by the FDA because they contain drugs.

ShopSmart says Stick with mascara. Lancôme Définicils, $24, was top-rated in their last test.

Hair Smoothers

Ads for Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), a popular salon technique, claim that it leaves hair smooth and healthy-looking for months. But a main ingredient in BKT is formaldehyde, a probable carcinogen that is not banned by the FDA in hair straighteners.

ShopSmart says Try a straightening iron. They like Revlon Perfect Heat Ceramic RVST2001C, $30.

Lip Plumpers

The results for lip plumpers were unimpressive for increasing lip volume, though some, including products from Clinique and DuWop, temporarily smoothed lip lines a little.

ShopSmart says Try makeup tricks instead. Line your lips with pencil just outside your natural lip line, then dot highlighter just above the upper lip and just below the lower lip. If you want a more permanent pout, see a cosmetic surgeon for temporary injections.

Scar Eliminators

No product can completely eliminate a scar or stretch marks.

ShopSmart says See a dermatologist. Certain laser treatments can reduce redness and smooth skin so scars are less noticeable.

Bust Boosters

There are no ingredients that have been scientifically proven to enhance or firm the bust.

ShopSmart says Use a moisturizer or bust cream if your décolletage needs softening. Or try a push-up bra or bra inserts, aka “chicken cutlets.”

Under-Eye-Circle Erasers

Many products promise to erase under-eye circle, but they’re hard to treat due to enlarged veins and very thin skin under the eyes.

ShopSmart says Some eye creams with caffeine can offer temporary help for puffiness. If the problem is allergy-related, try antihistamines or topical hydrocortisone cream. You can also see your dermatologist for cosmetic surgery.

Double-Chin Slimmer

A $20 infomercial gadget called the Neckline Slimmer promises to eliminate a double chin with resistance exercise, but the device mainly exercises neck-flexor muscles that have nothing to do with a double chin.

ShopSmart says Try losing some weight or see a cosmetic surgeon. A scarf might also do the trick.

Chief Blonde and Blogger Review: When I first heard about this little product, MagnaPods, I was so excited to review it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE organizers, so I had high hopes for these little babies! Well when the box of three MagnaPods arrived for my review I was not the least bit disppointed!

The package itself was not very big, but contained the three organizers shown above. MagnaPods were neatly packaged. I found the clear plasitic product was well made with powerful magnets in the back. Definitely not cheesy. This product would be great in any woman’s medicine cabinet who is challenged for space and just needs one more place to store cosmetic items. Something else that was neat was that the dividers in the MagnaPods could be moved within the unit to create storage pockets that are just the right size for your items! Also, no matter how many times, the medicine cabinet door was slammed or yanked open, these wonderful MagnaPods did not move NOR did the cosmetic items in them! Yippee! A product that really helps us Menopausal and Post-Menopausal stay organized–and remember where we put things–I don’t know about you but that alone would make me buy them! Chief Blonde’s Review: Oh my goodness, this was as much fun as going to an ice cream shop and ordering a chocolate Sundae, but I was the ice cream. First of all, I used the chocolate Purifying Face Mask. It had the consistency of Saunder’s Hot Fudge sauce and went on my face in wonderful globs. It was like being a kid again or a princess in a fancy spa. I left it on for 10 minutes and hopped in the shower in a chocolate scented glow.

Once I had showered off the mask, I used the exfoliating sugar body polish. Think pixie sticks dust combined with chocolate pudding. Really really fun AND stimulating! My skin felt alive and oozed a chocolately smell. Yum! I finished up with Whipped Body Souffle which is the color of a chocolate malt and the consistency of a fine chocolate Mousse. Ahh–this was the closest I have ever been to a chocolate high without having to consume one calorie! Highly recommended for Valentines! REALLY!

Makeup Tips For Women Over 30

Women over the age of 30 have their own unique challenges when it comes to make up and I am looking to address the following:

What colors are right for me i.e. how do women pick the right shades that compliment their eyes and skin tone?
Am I too old to wear trendy shades?
How do I apply eyeshadow, blush, foundation etc?
What are the key tools necessary to get the best evening look?
Solutions for common mistakes women over 30 make.
Are there any rules that women in their 30s, 40s, 50s+ should be following?”

I have been in the industry for over 14 years, and I get these questions all the time. The main thing to remember is that makeup should be fun–it is what you make it! Do not look to others for rules…if it feels good to you and makes you feel good about yourself, that is what’s important.

What rules do you use for women over 40?
I really dislike it when people who tell women over 40 “don’t wear shimmer!!” It’s hogwash. Of course women over 40 can wear shimmer. Just don’t overdo it–make sure the product is finely milled and is very high quality. Shimmer actually makes the skin look fresh and dewy, which is exactly what skin over 40 needs!!! It’s all about choosing a product that is right for you–not about adhering to “rules”. Don’t buy the cheap stuff–it will look like glitter, and that’s not cute. A Radiance Booster is a perfect example. It gives a golden glow to the skin without looking like you have anything on.

-What Colors Are Right For Me? Am I too old to wear trendy shades?
This is my most asked question. I give the same answer every time: what colors do you like? What colors are you passionate about? This is your starting point. Never wear something because someone tells you to. You need to be comfortable in it. If it is a color you are passionate about, and that you love, it will work–I guarantee. So, put away the “rules” about eye colors and what colors work best for whom. Let’s make makeup work for you by using colors that you like, that you are comfortable in–even if it’s blue!!! The key is to not overdo it. If you like blue, use a small amount as an eyeliner, not all over the eye. Or, use it as an accenting color. Be subtle, not brash (unless that’s the look you’re going for!!!)

-How do I apply eyeshadow, blush, foundation etc?
Keep it simple: Always use a base for the eyes. It brightens the eyes and gives longer life to your products. Then, take a bone or nude color all over the eyes. Take a darker color like brown or a shimmery dark color and blend it on the bottom half of the eye. The key is to blend makeup, don’t just place it on the skin. Blending it (applying a back and forth motion) makes it last longer, and look better. Then apply eyeliner and mascara, and that is a simple, glamorous look that is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

-Blush is simple: use a very small amount on the front of the cheek, and blend it out.
-Foundation: always use moisturizer first…then, apply a powder foundation. It will even out the skin tone, eradicate redness, while feeling like you have nothing on. Foundation should be a tad lighter than your skin tone. Dark foundation will age you, so when in doubt, go a little lighter, and you can always change the tone or color with bronzer.

What are the key tools necessary to get the best evening look?

You simply dust it over your face with a brush, and you will take ten years off your face! It’s luxurious, glamorous and simple!

I think women are nervous with makeup after the age of 30. They lose their sense of adventure, and decide to go safe. This is fine, but remember: makeup is supposed to be fun-to accentuate who you are!!! I think the biggest mistake is that women over 30 and 40 go into “neutral” mode. Meaning, they only buy neutral colors. Some solutions to this are to buy a shimmery steel grey. This color looks good on ANYONE! Or a shimmery Bronze. Again, you can’t go wrong with this color, and it will add some adventure to your makeup wardrobe!

Chief Blonde’s Remarks: Wow, the Ion Mask was awesome. Although the green clay mask looked hideous while on (see awesome video above), after rinsing it off, I felt like my face was so tight and smooth. Review, ModiFace iPhone App – “Who Put a Clown in my iPhone?”

I tried. Honestly. I tried to modify my face with the ModiFace iPhone app. It’s supposed to allow me to apply pretend makeup to my pretend face, but what I got was the Clown of Christmas Future.

To start, I needed to take a photo of my naked morning face. This is never easy, nor, frankly, very wise before strong coffee. You have to guess where you are in front of the lens. I love my iPhone, but why can’t they affix a mirror to the back of it so you can see what you’re snapping? I took 17 shots of my nose hair.

Finally. Got a photo of my VERY CLOSE FACE. Ugh. The app demands that my mouth be closed in the photo, so it‘s a mug shot, as if my naked face had been arrested for indecent exposure. Let’s fix that! Eye liner first. Select color – “dark plum.” Hit go. While it’s thinking and trying to find my eyes, the read-out says: “Makeup Brain is applying makeup.” There. Done. Whoa... There’s a thick smudgy line of dark plum UNDER my eyes. Under?! Women haven’t done that since Brooke Shields came out of her Calvins. I look like a Goth experiment in the nursing home. I look like Alice Cooper.

Let’s try something more subtle and less apt to terrify children. Let’s add foundation. Hit “go.“ Ooh. It appears as if someone applied a “blur” filter to my face, which, honestly, is not such a bad thing. Let’s do eyelashes, my favorite part of makeup. It gives me an array of colors to choose from, all of which are black. So, how about black. “Makeup Brain is applying makeup” and… NOOO!! Tammy Faye Bakker get back! Undo!! Where’s the exorcism button?!

This strange little app may not be ideal for us “vintage” women. I play with it for a few minutes just to rock out my inner clown. Green eye shadow, red lips, maroon cheeks. Maybe this ModiFace app does have some use, because now I know what I will look like when I’m calling BINGO! in the Home for Aging Circus Performers. Perhaps I just have “Makeup Brain,” but seriously, for 99 cents, buy a mirror, glue it to the back of your iPhone, and trim your nose hair.
