Minivan Sales To Rise in Women over 45

[ 4 ] June 23, 2010

ARE WE ALWAY GOING TO DRIVE THESE DARN MINIVANS? Apparently!

HONK SURVEY SUGGESTS THAT MINIVAN SALES ARE   POISED TO RISE AS US POPULATION AGES

After years of declining sales, minivans may be poised for a comeback.

Though minivans are most often associated with young families, a study by car-shopping website, Honk found an interesting group of minivan owners (13.3% of survey respondents) who had no children at all. Many of these owners were of retirement age and explained that their minivan purchase was influenced heavily by the needs of their multi-generational family and a desire to stay mobile as they aged.

Honk analyst, Matt Cragin notes, “The first wave of the enormous Baby Boom generation is just now reaching retirement age. If even just a fraction of those Boomers choose to go down the same path as the respondents in this survey, minivan sales will rise substantially in the coming years.”

The study highlighted the fact that minivans are well suited to older drivers and aging bodies. With a ride height that’s taller than cars but lower than sport utility vehicles, respondents explained that it’s easy to get in and out of the vehicle. Power sliding doors and rear hatches ease strain when loading cargo and were called out as popular features.

Respondents also explained that the minivan’s upright seating position and large windows helped them to feel more confident and in control of their vehicles. The excellent visibility is especially important for older drivers who tend to narrow their view ahead as peripheral vision fades and backs and necks begin to ache. By reducing the physical strain of driving, minivans help older drivers maintain their mobility and freedom as they age.

“It’s easier to get in and out of and the seating position is old man friendly,” joked one respondent.

The Honk study also found that minivans were considered a vital link that kept older respondents connected to their families. Three rows of seating provide comfortable accommodations for adult children and small grandchildren, allowing the whole family to ride together in one vehicle.

Respondents also noted that the vehicle’s kid-friendly design meant that Grandma and Grandpa were able to pick up the grandchildren and babysit without the hassle of trading cars with Mom and Dad.

Asked why she purchased a seven-seat minivan, one respondent summed up with, “I have five adorable grandkids – ha!”

“Baby Boomers may not resist minivans when the time comes,” notes Cragin. “They were the generation that popularized the vehicle as young parents in the 1980s, after all, “suggesting that many Boomers will feel right at home once they get back behind the wheel.

What do you think?  Will you be driving a minivan when you are 80?

Women 45 and over: Financially Unprepared for Golden Years and Aging at Home

[ 0 ] May 12, 2010
STUDY SHOWS WOMEN IN AMERICA PREFER AGING AT HOME BUT MANY WILL NOT HAVE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO DO SO
Economy and Lack of Preparation Threaten Future of Many Entering ‘Golden Years’
In a study released today by Volunteers of America, women 45 to 65 years of age report that they are frighteningly unprepared for old age—financially, legally or emotionally.  Many of these women also find themselves having to care for an aging parent and 48% of these caregivers report that the economic downturn has made the role of caregiver more difficult.
“We have a potential catastrophe looming with the collision of a significant, and growing, aging population, the economic downturn, and the health care crisis,” stated Rosemarie Rae, executive vice president with Volunteers of America.  The first baby boomers will reach 65 next year, with more than 71.5 million Americans in the 65 or older age bracket by 2030.  This will be the largest senior population in U.S. history and almost double the approximately 37 million seniors today.  “This is a large, emerging crisis in America,” added Rae.
“Medicare already pays out more in benefits than it brings in and will be insolvent by 2017,” Rae continued. “Social security will pay out more than it collects beginning in 2016 and the system as a whole will be insolvent by 2037.”   Medicaid statistics are equally alarming.  In order to qualify, most people must bankrupt themselves before they can receive long-term care coverage.
“We are hopeful that healthcare reform will begin to shape this discussion and mitigate the negative impacts of the current system,” added Rae.
The Volunteers of America study also reported that an overwhelming majority—97% of women and 94% of men—believe that the elderly should be allowed to age at home, if they want to.  Almost half of the women surveyed expect that they will be called upon to provide care to an older family member at some point in the future and more than 54% stated that it is not likely that they will be able to care for the family member.
A majority of those interviewed reported that they were unable to make financial, career or family sacrifices in order to care for an older family member.  More than 65% stated that they would be unable to take time off of work to care for an elderly loved one, and 86% of women interviewed and 81% of men agreed that better workplace policies are needed to meet family obligations to help aging family members.
Only about half of those interviewed have done any preparation for their own aging.  In addition to not having financial stability, many have not entered into discussions with family members about how they should be cared for.  Most have not talked to their doctor about aging issues and more than 50% do not have a power of attorney and/or will in place.
Volunteers of America has spent more than a century anticipating and adapting to the needs of the most vulnerable citizens.  In preparation for the growing health care demands associated with an unprecedented rising number of aging individuals, Volunteers of America commissioned a study (conducted by Lake Research/American Viewpoint) to determine the most challenging issues facing Americans regarding care giving and aging.   The findings from the study have validated Volunteers of America’s Aging with OptionsTM initiative, which provides an integrated care and support system for older Americans and their caregivers.
Volunteers of America identified four primary challenge areas faced by aging women and their caretakers:  economic issues, desire for independence, workplace flexibility, and lack of preparation.
The complete study is available at www.volunteersofamerica.org.

STD Awareness in Women over 45

[ 0 ] May 6, 2010
STD Awareness Month and Our Youth Obsession
This year, the CDC, Planned Parenthood, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and others are sponsoring a great STD awareness campaign by MTV to encourage young people to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases.  It’s called Get Yourself Tested or GYT and it’s a terrific campaign for National STD Awareness Month.
However, this campaign points to one inherent problem in our efforts to bring STD Awareness to the country – it targets the youth market and ignores trending disease rates in older age groups.  STDs do not disproportionally affect young people but marketing campaigns would make us believe that’s so.
While it is certainly critical to teach young people how to protect themselves, this important public health awareness effort needs to be broader in scope. The facts show that, according to the CDC, the highest number of newly acquired cases of HIV/AIDS have been found in middle-aged adults, ranging in age from 35 to 44. Following closely behind is the group aged 45 to 54 with the least affected age group being the young people – those aged 25 to 34.
Why might this be?
In a University of Chicago survey of single women ages 58 to 93, nearly 60% said they didn’t use a condom the last time they had sex. A May 2008 study conducted by the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene showed that among single people with at least two sexual partners, 56% of people over age 45 reported using condoms the last time they had sex, compared with 61% of 25-to-44-year-olds and 80% of 18-to-24-year-olds.
Even though the older, and assumed wiser, adults are not the focus of major sexual health awareness efforts, they are the ones taking the most risk. The new faces of HIV/AIDS and other STDs are not just gay men, the sexually promiscuous or intravenous drug users, it’s the woman over 50 who doesn’t use condoms because she’s not worried about getting pregnant. Or even the 42-year-old divorced dad who’s back on the dating scene again after many years and doesn’t know how to bring up the topic of using condoms or regular STD testing.
Viagra, Facebook, online dating, increased rates of midlife divorce, and a lack of awareness may all be contributing forces here. However, the reality is that STDs are no longer just an affliction of the young.
As grownups, it’s important for us not to follow the “do as I say, not as I do” mantra. STDs and their impacts are not taboo anymore, they are an important part of our regular health as adults.
So this STD Awareness Month, make sure you get the message. It’s important for people of all ages to hear it. STDs and HIV are preventable. Use condoms every time you have sexual contact.   Be sure to get STD tested and make smart decisions about your sexual health, like talking to your partner about testing.
Talking about STDs and getting tested is something we just don’t talk about with our friends and family.  We wish we could change this part of our culture. Even in a modern, enlightened society, we just don’t talk about sexual health. That’s unfortunate and contributes to a massive public health problem. If we talked about STDs in an open and honest way, we could make great strides in screening and treating sexually transmitted infections and disease. STD Awareness month is a great way to start to re-think this part of our health.  Let’s think about getting tested for STDs the way we think about recycling, eating organic food, staying fit, and all of the other things we do to make our bodies healthy and the world a healthier place.

One-Step Easter Eating Plan: Let Your Fork Do the Heavy Lifting
Don’t want to be the FAT bunny this Easter?

If you’re committed to hosting the Easter Egg Hunt, you will face a never-ending array of tempting food choices. If you’re not careful, the pounds you add are likely to become lifelong companions.

Some of us are very strict about our diets. We bring our own food in a plastic container and eat it while others enjoy the holiday fare. Others of us are perhaps a little too self-indulgent, denying ourselves nothing.

Carole Carson—dubbed “An Apostle for Fitness” by the Wall Street Journal—is the coach for the AARP Fat 2 Fit online community and the author of From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction. Carole offers one simple step you can take at parties that will help you minimize your caloric intake:

Eat nothing except what you can put on a fork.

In other words, eat foods only where you can sit down and use utensils, including your fork.

The calories in those bite-size nibbles and finger foods you eat unconsciously while standing and talking with friends and acquaintances quickly add up. You can easily consume 600–800 calories solely from appetizers. The same holds true when you are preparing food for your own party. The little nibbles you take to “test” your appetizers count, as far as your body is concerned.

By limiting yourself to food eaten with a fork, you can minimize the accumulation of unwanted pounds during the holidays. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful weigh to start having fun this spring?

The Chief Blonde Says:
From Fat to Fit:Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction by Carole Carson is a FUN read.  You can’t say that very often about a diet book.  Written by a 60-something dynamo, Carole describes how she took her 5′ 1″ frame from 182 to 120 going from a size 18 to a size 6.  Then she went on to inspire a whole town to shape up losing 4 tons in the process.  Doesn’t sound like your average diet book, right?  The difference I see here is that it is the story of a personal journey versus an expert advising from afar.  She details all her funny stories along the way.  Carole is so inspirational she now teaches her approaches and has appeared on the NBC Today Show, CBS’s Early Show, MSNBC’s Countdown.
Carole Carson, as a weapon of Mass Reduction AND a Woman over 45 (like we are) is truly an inspiration!  Keep up the great work Carole.  www.fromfat2fit.com.

FDA to Investigate Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva, Reclast and other bisphosphonates

FDA to Investigate Possible Osteoporosis Drug-Femur Fracture Link After ABC News Report

Agency Says It Will Work With Outside Experts to Gather More Information
By CHRISTINE ROMO, LARA SALAHI and DAN CHILDS
March 10, 2010—
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that it will look into whether a link exists between the long-term use of certain osteoporosis drugs and a particular type of leg fracture after ABC News reports investigated the possible connection. Common brand names of these medications, known as bisphosphonates, include Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva and Reclast.
“Recent news reports have raised the question about whether there is an increased risk of this type of fracture in patients with osteoporosis using these medications,” the FDA said today in its drug safety communication.
“At this point, the data that FDA has reviewed have not shown a clear connection between bisphosphonate use and a risk of atypical subtrochanteric femur fractures,” the statement said. “FDA is working closely with outside experts, including members of the recently convened American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Subtrochanteric Femoral Fracture Task Force, to gather additional information that may provide more insight into this issue.”
Fosamax is supposed to make bones stronger, but now there’s mounting evidence that for some women, taking Fosamax or its generic alendronate for more than five years could cause spontaneous fractures.
Sales of the popular drug increased when doctors began prescribing it not only to women showing signs of osteoporosis, but also those who were osteopenic, and thus, at risk for the disease. Now some doctors worry that staying on the drug for more than five years can cause some women’s bones to become more brittle.
This is not the first time that many doctors have reported an opposite effect for many people taking the drug. Fosamax has already been linked to severe musculoskeletal pain, as well as to a serious bone-related jaw disease called osteonecrosis.
“In worldwide post-marketing experience with FOSAMAX/FOSAMAX Plus D, rare reports consistent with osteonecrosis of the jaw have been received. Many of these reports lack sufficient clinical details to make definitive assessments and/or are confounded, particularly since a generally accepted definition of ONJ in the general population is unknown,” Merck responded in a written response to the suggested link. “Rare cases of ONJ have also been reported in patients who do not have osteoporosis and who have not taken any bisphosphonate medicines.”
FDA to Seek Outside Expertise on Osteoporosis Drugs
In 2008, the FDA reached out to the pharmaceutical company Merck about the reports of femur fractures. After 16 months, Merck added patients’ reports of femur fractures to the list of possible side effects reported by patients included in the drug’s package insert.
“It took Merck an entire year to respond,” ABC News senior health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser said. “Just six words: ‘low energy femoral shaft and subtrochanteric fractures.’”
The FDA has also never made an effort to inform the public or doctors across the country who prescribe bisphosphonates of the possible side effect, Besser said. A causal relationship between Fosamax and these fractures has not been established, according to Merck.  Many studies suggest an overall benefit from taking the medication for women who are at risk for osteoporosis. In fact, bisphosphonates can help prevent hip and spine fractures, which for many women may lead to death.
In 2008, bisphosphonate sales exceeded $3.5 billion according to data from IMS Health. In 2008, over 37 million prescriptions were written for the osteoporosis medication

Facial: Doctor’s Office Versus Spa, Women over 45, Which is Right for You?

[ 0 ] March 9, 2010
Terri N.–A Beautiful 50-Something Woman Who Favors Doctor’s Office Facials

Recently, the Chief Blonde and Blogger at Still Blonde after all these Years was contacted by the Peer Group to present an explanation of Doctor’s office facials versus Spa facials.  I thought this was a topic that you readers would enjoy.  I insisted that we have pictures and comments from a woman over 50, someone like us, who we could feature by showing her results and feelings.

But a facial is just a facial right?  The treatment that you get at a spa is much different than one you would get in a Doctor’s office.  The “medical facial” has become increasingly popular to treat fine lines, wrinkles, rosacea and other problems that both women and men face.

The Peer Group Center for Plastic Surgery in Florham Park, NJ gives you the scoop on the real difference between a spa facial and a “medical facial” and which one is best for you:

Doctor’s Office
Spa

What you get:  Doctor office treatments are physician exclusive treatments that are performed under a physician’s supervision and include prescription strength treatments and products.  Doctor offices perform skin care treatments.  Physician-Exclusive Peels include Micropeels, Micropeel Plus and Microdermabraision.  These treatments address find lines, brown spots, age spots, acne, skin imperfections and photo-aged skin, stimulating cellular renewal.  In addition to assisting with the correction of skin concerns, they also help preserve healthy skin and aid the prevention of future skin damage and aging.

What you get:  If you’re looking for a relaxing facial treatment then a spa is the right place for you.  While at a spa, cosmetologists will treat you with hydrating facials, anti-aging facials and acne facials, using luxurious lotions and aromatherapy products.  But you will not get a physician to come and speak to you about your skin concerns and what prescription-strength products can help.  Nor will you get an attentive Doctor who is able to spot trouble signs (like a questionable birthmark or beginning signs of rosacea).

Pros:
· Performed under physician supervision
· Variety of facial services available
· Physician-strength products target skin care issues.
·  Exclusive physician-only treatments available
Cons:
· May not be as “relaxing” as a spa treatment.
Pros:
· Relaxing, aromatherapy treatment available
· Variety of facial services available

Cons:
· Is not performed under physician supervision
Terri N. added, “ … medical facials has taken years off my skin.  I am able to talk with the doctor after my treatments and monitor my skin’s imperfections up to the minute which allows me to be able to reverse sign of damage almost immediately.  I wish I knew about medical facial when I was 20… I would have been coming all along!”
